Spec me a tripod please!

Get the RS283 or 284 with the other heads then? :). I wasn't sure on the ball head originally either but i like it now.

I wouldn't bother.

A 283 and RH12 is the BEST combo under £100 (and £200 for that matter).

It's weighty but not overly heavy. Unless you go for the £350+ tripods there's no real upgrade over the redsnapper stuff.

I am super impressed with the ones I got (as a result of the second link on my thread). I got it for Birthday too, and love it. Really really well made and excellent quality. Love the ball head too!

Looking at the RSH-528 head, it doesn't really look all that robust compared to the Manfrotto? Also, does the 10% off for being a Talk Photo member still apply? And how do I go about that?

IIRC you get it redeemed after you buy it - probably worth giving the guy from RedSnapper an email (on TP). I'd still recommend the Ball Head though, very, very sturdy tripod :)

Ok, is there a cap on how "active" you have to be on TP? I've only got about 15 posts, but Join Date: 24-07-2009. Or do you literally just have to have an account?

I'm going to have to going and play with a ball head and pan/tilt head before i choose that I think. Seems to be quite a divided opinion on them! :D

First off, sorry for the double post, but its been two days since my last post!

I've been looking at the Redsnapper again, and I've settled on that. But now the choice between the 283 or 284.

From the description, they seem identical, apart from the fact that one has 3 sections, and the other, 4. They're both the same price?

Help!? :p :p :p

The 284 is slightly smaller, especially when folded (490mm V 620mm). They take the same weight and weigh the same. The 283 has a higher max height, the 284 a lower min height. If you reverse the centre tube though both go down to the ground. I went for the 283 in the end as it's slightly higher, I couldn't work out any advantage of having 3 or 4 sections myself! Technically I guess a 4 section would be less stable than 3 due to the amount of joints, but we're talking such small amounts I don't know if it makes any difference in actual use?

I like the sounds of the higher max height, plus, my current tripod has 3 sections, so why change! :p

THanks :p

One thing if you do go with the RedSnapper, beware of over loosening the twist locks as you can end up with a tripod in one hand, the tripod leg section in the other and a whole load of seal rings on the floor :D

It is easy to put back together, although not obvious to start with. I've got a picture I took somewhere showing how it goes back together. As long as you are aware of it though it is not an issue as all :)

Ok, that is something to bare in mind! I don't want to be standing on holiday, crying because my shiney new tripod has fell apart! :p

Bear in mind 490mm vs 620mm (+ head unless you detach it - which you don't want to be bothered with too often) is a reasonable difference. My 3 section Manfrotto won't fit in most of my luggage and if you're flying you really want it to - hence I got a 4 section carbon fibre job for travelling...

Maybe it's irrelevant if (for example) it's going to live in a car, but it's worth thinking about anyway...

Thanks, but i think i'm going to stick with the redsnapper now :)

Hmm, that's a good point, i will be looking to travel with it, hence one is the smaller one? I can't get on the Redsnapper site atm, it doesn't load in either IE or FF. anyone else get this?

The hosting for redsnapper is poo - they seem to end up down a lot because of the amount of traffic (exceeding the allowances!). If you want I'll find you a phone number when I get home this evening?

It's alright matey, i'm in no hurry, not ordering it until this time next week. But thanks for the offer! :)

283 is 3 section, 284 is 4 section - the 4 section is 13cm shorter and it's maximum height is 8cm less than the 3 section. It will also take longer to put up (more joints = more time). The 3 section is the way to go unless you've got a decent reason to get the 4 section but if you need to travel with it then it not fitting in your luggage is a fairly decent reason in my book...

Everyone keeps saying about putting the tripod in luggage. Are you not allowed to take them on as hand luggage?

I'm not sure if you can but these days you can't get out of the country with more than one item of hand luggage, given a choice between £10k of camera gear or my tripod being placed at the mercy of baggage handlers it's a fairly easy choice...

indeed, but being 17, i still travel with my parents! :p I could carry my camera gear, my dad the tripod, and my mum that massive bag that women carry! :p

I shall have to research out whether you can carry them on, as i'm not sure that there'd be room in the case
