Just starting out mainly with family photo's of the new born child etc. Basically looking for a tripod that i can set up to take some more family photo's without balancing the camera on the sofa arm etc.

Will be ordering a remote shutter release shortly so any advice on a decent but not to expensive tripod will be good. Up to £50 or so. If over this amount it had better be good!

Kit so far

Nikon D40
18-55mm stock kit lense
70-300mm APO DG lense.

Cheers

i have a velbon 640 - its not too bad a bit plastically with alu legs. Decent height for me at 5'7''.

my advice is (if you can) wait and save for something a bit more solid. Its doing fine for me until i can get some money together for more kit. I will still use it as a light(ish) carry about but normally i would prefer something heavier/better built.

I agree with 33L - I'm planning on getting a Manfrotto 190XPROB Which is ~£85 but it's light, sturdy and very versatile. Bear in mind that it's not ideal for people around the 6' mark, but I'm 5'9 so I'm fine. :)

Of course the above doesn't come with a head so that's extra, but the head should really be chosen by the type of photography you do so I can't really price it up.

If you want something that will last and be capable of more than you need right now, then you're probably looking at about £135 all in for a 190xprob and basic head on the bay. Worth every penny if you can. It holds my 350D and 70-300mm at 300mm, no problems

Having said that, if you're just going to be using it indoors then it's not worth the money. Something cheaper and smaller should work. Gorillapod if you have something sturdy at the right height to wrap it round

interesting stuff guys thanks - i'm 6'3" if that makes any help. Not really looking to go mad with the price at this time. will check out the stuff so far mentioned when i get a chance.

Any others?

Look at a Velbon Sherpa 450R for a budget (About £60) if your 6'3" and don't want to be stooping all the time you use it :) It's very solid and the head is quite nice too.

Slik Pro 400 DX is around for about the £55 mark excluding delivery at the moment if you Google for it.

But, at your height, maybe the Slik Pro 700 DX might be better if you can increase your budget by £35 as it extends to 1900mm which will be more comfortable to use.

Both those have heads, and are designed for medium format/slr cameras so are solid enough and stable.

I've got the 400DX, but I paid a lot more than £55 for it (!), and it suits me fine and is a huge step up from the cheap generic alloy one I used for a couple of years.

I'd agree with the 700. I use one quite a lot - it's a heavy old hector - but is built like a brick outhouse and is very adaptable. The head is very nice to use as well. The fact the centre column is reverable is a great addition too.

Looks to be available for £85 as well which is a stonking price.

I to need to get a tripod...probably got to jessops to have a play.....as I got a 40D I needs something that can take the weight of that and a 70-200 L lens but I am only 5'9 so don't need a tall one

Something that's come up on TP fairly recently is RedSnapper. It's a company formed by a photographer who though that for what he was getting, he (and everyone else) was being consistently overcharged. He now does his own stuff and I have to say it looks amazing. User reviews on TP have been excellent for the ball head (though nobody's done the tripod yet) but it's made to the same quality.

£49 with a 10% TP discount. The RedSnapper head is also £49, again with the discount for TP people.

I'm waiting for my student loan to come through so I can have a look at my finances but I'm seriously looking at getting one. If I do, I'll be sure to give the kit a good review here.

Google - RedSnapper tripod.

bump for this and update

Just been into the local independent camera shop and was looking for a tripod.

Budget was around £60 or so.

Guy showed me a few but the Velbon Sherpa 200R was very nice with some good features, quick release head etc etc. £69.99 in the shop but guessed i could get it cheaper elsewhere online by a few pounds.

Just been googling for it and:eek::eek::eek:

£36.50!!

A purchase for me - no question - nice tripod - not to heavy but nice and sturdy. Glad i didn't make any impulse purchases in the shop!
