I used to play some pretty complex board games when I was younger. Playing XCOM again reminded me how much I like turn based strategy.

Any recommendations for top drawer turn based strategy in recent years? Graphics not important.

I bought unity of command at Christmas but still havnt played it much - maybe I need to check it out again - and make sure im playing it right

It's hard as nails. Pure strategy to the core.

The supply line mechanic is brilliant -- one oversight can quickly see your forces obliterated. Likewise, poor planning will see you run over turns and lose the scenario.

I only play it sparingly because it hurts my head -- yet I guess that's also testament to its quality.

Defense Grid is pretty awesome.

'Players must defend military bases from waves of attacking aliens by positioning a range of tower-based weaponry. New levels provided as downloadable content have been developed in the two years since the game's initial release. All reviewers praised the game, with many noting that the quality of the game was high for a budget title.'

Civ 5, Galactic Civ II, XCOM Enemy Unknown.

I mentioned XCOM in the OP. I managed to complete that recently on Impossible! :)

It is what has really sparked my desire to play some more turn based strategy. I much prefer it to RTS stuff.

I have played Civ to death over the years - Civs 1 to 5 (with all expansions). Civ is a game that I will keep coming back to time and time again.

Gal Civ II looks very good so I think I am going to give that a crack.

Any recommendations for other turn based games very much appreciated.
