I'm really in the mood for a new strategy game. Here are a few pointers to aid with suggestions:

  • nothing too fast / requiring high APM - I love the setting of SC2, but I just don't have the technical ability to play it well
  • I do love turn based games (more time to think about strategy)
  • I have played lots of Civ, so looking for something else
  • Probably not anything from Paradox, as I maybe don't have the time to get into something that deep (I am open to persuasion on this)
  • ideally something with a decent solo campaign / one player action, but with the option of competitive online PVP
  • setting wise, I am open to most things, but prefer fantasy / space / medieval to world war setting

Anything jumping to mind?

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions so far chaps! I've been researching them all. Endless Legend really appeals, as I love the idea of really unique factions, and strategically, it looks really deep. My main concern is that I just don't have the gaming time to really get into something like this.

What about RTS games? What are the Warhammer 40K / Warhammer Total War games like? Are they pretty frantic? Or more slow paced than Starcraft 2?

Crusader Kings 2. It's deep but not quite as crazy as most Paradox games. And it's great!
Amen to this. CK2 is the best strategy game because it is unique and the player is creating it's own stories. Not the other way around.
And also is vast. Especially with the expansions. You can play anything from Vikings, to some peasant count in Ireland, to merchant, to some sultan in Islamic countries. In just a year clocked 1000 hours on that game, and yet haven't played half of it.

While the "storylines" you create can be memorable. Especially those of some rulers who managed to do a lot while they slowly faced death due to illnesses spanning decade.

Imperator Rome next year looks similar.
