Spec me a tyre inflator

I also have a hankering for something which stays in the garage and is mains powered. Saves either using up car battery power, or having to run it needlessly. And can be kept in place so I'm not having to raid the car boot for the portable one.

And, like the OP, I've wondered about going for a compressor so it can be used for (ill-defined) 'other stuff' too. But it seems needlessly over specified for my needs. Shame there isn't something out there a bit smaller.

I just use one of these to check the pressures...

and one of these to pump in air...

The pump has a quick release connector and you don’t have to run the car to use it. I’ve got one of those ring electronic ones as well but I don’t use it.

It’s 2022.. Do we still use manual foot pumps with analogue gauges? :D

I prefer the Ring as you set the pressure and it turns off once that is achieved.

I get why you prefer a manual foot pump, but haven't used them since my BMX days lol

My method is undo metal dust cap, check current pressure with digital pressure gauge, if needed connect foot pump and give about 5 pumps.

Disconnect foot pump quickly using quick release so as not to lose much air, and recheck with digital pressure gauge. It’s often spot on at this stage but if not reconnect foot pump and give a few more pumps then recheck again with digital pressure gauge.

If it reads too high I can use the digital pressure gauge to get the pressure down to the correct amounts.

Only thing is my digital pressure gauge may read 1 to 1.5 PSI over the correct amount but that’s nothing really.

The Ring is great as a pump, but the digital readout is waaaay out. I carry a RaceX analogue gauge in the car to check it after filling. 38PSI on my gauge is 43PSI on the Ring, so I know to just set it at that and leave it til it turns off.

The halfords michelin one (product number: 538753) has done me well for the last few years. There was a time when I had to use it every couple of days on leaky tyres. Quite quiet and reliable.

My Sakura digital pressure gauge seems pretty accurate. I checked the tyre pressures with it after it was serviced and it read 1 to 1.5 PSI over.

That’s assuming the technician set my tyres to the correct values of at or around 29 PSI on the fronts and 36 PSI on the rears with their equipment. My pressure gauge read 30 and 30.5 PSI on the fronts and 37 and 37.5 PSI on the rears.

Therefore it may read 1 to 1.5 PSI over the actual values so if I set the fronts to 29 PSI and the rears to 36 PSI according to my Sakura digital pressure gauge they’d quite possibly be 27.5 or 28 PSI on the fronts and 34.5 or 35 PSI on the rear.

This is assuming the tyres were inflated very accurately by the technician who serviced my car.
