For my university project I need a very high resolution webcam, preferably above 1080p, that can run constantly at 25FPS or higher (preferably 30FPS). The preferred supplier for my university only has a few cameras capable of 1080p or higher and the reviews for all of them have multiple complaints of poor framerate. Audio quality is not an issue as I only need the video feed.

I know you cant discuss competitors here but if you could give me the make and model of any suggestions you have that would be great. The budget I have for the project is pretty small (£150) but the webcam should be the only thing I will need to buy. If it requires USB3 or firewire or some other unusual connection then I may need to buy a PCI or PCIe card for the computer to give me that connectivity, depending on if there are any spare cards at the university.

Have you considered a normal HDcam? Might be more suitable for hd recording at highish fps. They dont tend to be built with bandwidth restrictions in mind. (Which I presume webcams will consider).

Good choice of uni there :D

What's the use of this? :) What about something like the Logitech C920

The main aim of the project is to make some sort of a digital stabilisation program, so that you could move the camera all over the place and it would keep the video pointed at the same thing. If there is time then the plan is to stitch the video feed together to make one giant image kind of like the panoramic photo mode of some cameras, but there might not be time for that. The reason I need such a high resolution camera is that I need to take a small window of the camera feed and move that about a bit.

I was about to say that the C920 was one of the cameras i had looked at and discarded because it was out of stock at the university's preferred supplier with no sign of returning, but it is back in stock now so it seems like a good contender. Talking to my supervisor makes me think anything above 1080p just wont happen as well, so thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Mynight, would normal HD cameras be able to transmit their video feed directly to a computer at a high resolution? Its a good thought but i'm worried that it will just downscale the video if its sending a live feed to the computer

PS. Are you being sarcastic about Reading uni or do you genuinely think its good?

Quite sincere about thinking its good. Its where I went to uni. Used to manage a few of the clubs down there as well :D (best job for a single student haha).

AlecR is quite correct you would need usb3 or thunderbolt. Seeing you have a 955be I'm guessing usb 2? You could pick up a pci based usb 3 adapter which would provide enough throughput. As for a powerful computer you could drop the framerate most likly to one the cpu can handle. Youd have a lot more control over the quality this way in my opinion.

It needs to work on the computer the uni has given me, which I believe has a Q6600 and the worst motherboard in the history of the universe (seriously, the lack of connections is astonishing). I've spoken to my supervisor and it looks like the logitech will do just fine, so i'll probably order that since it is now in stock at the incredibly overpriced preferred supplier. thanks for the help guys :)

Argh sorry about that. I was under the impression they had a huge refresh last year or the year before. Ill hush now :D

Good luck :)

there are some new computers around, but mine isn't one of them, and I need admin privileges for my project so using the 'public' computers isnt an option
