Hey everyone,

Hopefully picking up my new car in the near future, a 2004 BMW. It doesn't come with any sort of warranty and so have been looking around the different options that companies offer. So far the top ones seem to be Warranty Wise and Warranty Direct. Any opinions on either of these? WW seem to offer better cover but then are a little more expensive. Any experiences you all have and any recommendations would be great!

It really rather depends on what 2004 BMW, as you'll pay about £350 for a half decent warranty on something like a 325i but double or even twice that on something like an M3.

There is no such thing as a good warranty company, instead you must chose the least worst and be prepared to fight them every time you claim. Try Warranty Direct.

Is there really a need to get a warranty on an 04? Or on older cars in general?

these days a car from 2003 should be fine tbh, our car is from 2000 and has never broken down, has had heavy use too

As you say am looking at around £700 for a years warranty on a 2004 M3. I'm just trying to decide if its worth it. I agree that as cars age they are obviously more likely to break down and the repair costs would be substantial. For at least the first year it of owning it, having some protection would be nice....just not sure if its £700 worth of peace of mind!

They are more likely to break as they age not less likely?

Yeah I understand that, but what I mean is surely when things break after old age it is due to the general wear & tear of parts which generally would not be covered by warrantees.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

The two companies I mentioned cover failure of parts due to wear and tear.

Warranty Direct has consistently been recommended by the motoring journalist in the Telegraph - Honest John. Always seem to get good reports about them.

Andi.

Its hard to know whether journalist are fully impartial though. Warranty Wise is actually owned and run by Quentin Wilson, that guy who used to be on Top Gear....

I'm with Warranty Direct for the RX8. So far they have paid for both claims I have put to them. The 1st one with no quibble after a sensor died, 2nd claim was a bit more hassel as the fault was intermittent and between me and the garage we made around 6 or so calls to WD to convince them to honour the claim. Had to pay up front and then send in/email the relevant documents to them, takes around 3 weeks for a cheque to come through covering the costs.

I have an 05 plate Astra not exactly a Bimmer and even that has been perfect so far.

1 new set of tyres in almost 5 years and a few MOTs/services. Not even had new brake pads yet!

I really do think cars are getting more and more reliable, yet people still replace them every 3 years.

Risk it.

I wouldnt bother, its not likely to need substantial warranty claimable repairs.

Its the consumables including servicing which will cost you money on an M3 primarily, i'd just chuck a couple of grand aside in a general rainy day fund (as everybody should do anyway) and treat it carefully and risk it.

Thanks for the replies, although it seems pretty split as to whether a warranty is worth it! I tend to agree with Fox, if something goes wrong on an M3 its a little more expensive then an Astra!
