Spec me..a washing machine

are they the ones that were on watchdog recently because they made everything mouldy and didnt have a setting that allowed the machine itself to be cleaned properly? (it was something beginning with m anyway)
Indesit Moon is the one you are thinking of (they are utterly crap) :)

mehhh landlady says budget is £250 !!

Silly moo, it'll break in another 2 years and then another £250 spent.

No it won't, if every single washing machine sold for £250 quid died within two years there would be no market for them, your simply spreading a falsehood.

Love advice like this! as said above my £100 Hotpoint has worked flawlessly for 6 years (touch wood) while my £800 Bosch oven is on it's second replacment control knob! Before that we had an ariston machine for a couple of years that my brother then had and is now in a house he rents out again it has worked perfectly for 7 -8 years.

Modernwhite goods are generally very reliabkle, just buy the best you can afford and don't get hung up and brand names.

Of course, because yours have worked with no problems that is an accurate sample of the brand. I forget.

DMpoole will probably be along in a bit and he is probably the most qualified person on here to tell you about different white goods brands.

I merely put mine forward as an example if you like I can bang in the history of every washing machine I know about the majority of which were bdget brands that ran flawlessly for years hell the thing we had in our student house was proper old school with a clockwork dial and that never missed a beat in the two years we abused it with over weight loads and no maintenance? The reliability figures for all these brands are very very good you only have to look at the which guides.

I know DMpoole will be along to regail us with his experience I am just offering a counter point to this forums Miele/Bosh obsession that comes out every time someone asks for a domestic appliance.

I thank you for your input a1ex2001 all comments are welcome.

I've spotted a Beko in her budget range that says it is quiet and quiet is a must, has 7kg drum but has no eco wash but I can live with that.

WMB71442W Beko Washing Machine White £247 delivered

We've always gone for the Hotpoint Aquarius range, the one we have has the timer which is such a great feature.

Hotpoint WMF760G looks OK for money

The Hoover (don't laugh) branded one we had years ago was a great budget one that did the job perfectly well and was only £140.

Buy the cheapest you can find and save the leftover dosh for a future replacement if you need it, you never know it may last ages.

I had a beko that lasted just over a year and I had to replace a pipe in it within a few months (poor design inside) then the drum broke. It was one of these quiet/Eco things.

I now have a cheap indesit that has worked fine for the year I've had it and yes do not buy the indesit moon, mother in law has one and it has the mould issue mentioned on watchdog.

Our Hotpoint has worked without any problems for the past 8 years and is still going strong.

Those saying get a cheap machine, aren't planning ahead.

Let's say you buy £250 washing machine, and it lasts 5 years with no service costs - it fails, you buy another £250 machine. Repeat every 5 years. That's £1,000 over 20 years - the expectancy of a Miele.

Look around, you can find a Miele for about £800.

Meile's are ok and do last a long time but I often find they don't wash as well as even the cheaper Indesits.

If I buy something first of all it has to do what it supopsed to do and secondly last a long time, not the other way round.

I've always found Miele to wash very well. If you can afford one, and you can get a base model for around £650-£700 if you shop around and use voucher codes you won't go far wrong.

Quality and serviceability of machines has declined over the last 10 years for the cheaper brands. Many historically respected brands, eg Hotpoint, are now poor quality junk. Sure, some people won't have any problems, but many do.

The problem with Miele is that parts and technical information are very difficult to get hold of outside their own service network. The long warranty is good, but a friend who always buys top end Miele stuff had a problem with the machine making a grating noise. Called them out, 3 hours to split the drum and remove a bra wire and a coin that had got stuck. Not covered by warranty - owner misuse apparantly, £250 bill from Miele service for the labour.

I've got a Bosch machine and recently had a problem with the drum bearing seal failing. Decided to repair it myself because all the parts diagrams are on the Bosch Service web site and the parts aren't stupidly priced.

Perhaps each new machine will be more energy efficient then the last, making the Miele use more power over its lifespan.

Also you might get lucky and it could cost a lot less overtime.

He is after a new one, not a 6 year old one.
In 2002 Merloni took over Creda/Hotpoint along with Indesit/Ariston who they already owned.
Around 2005 the Italians decided to use the most cheapest parts they could find resulting in virtually every product being floored or quarantined before being quickly repaired.
I was the Quality Audit Technician for 27 years and all 5 of us in the Quality Department did not own a Creda, Hotpoint, Ariston or Indesit product between us.
During 1000s of quality meetings the Italians would not listen to our pleas to use better parts.
The products are now built in Poland where they care even less.
You have been lucky.

Take the advide or not - I don't care.

All of my family have Hotpoint washers the same as mine, that's 6 in total all over 5 years old and all have never failed.

I imagine now I have said that all of them will now fail.. :(
