I've never had a nice watch before and my current watch (15yrs old, cost about £50) is on the way out. I've had a Galaxy smart watch for a few years but I just went back to my current standard watch after a while because I found the Galaxy watch too clumpy and I never really used the functions. I'm no watch collector or enthusiast so my idea of a nice watch needs to be under £300 or so. I'm not quite at the stage yet where I could put down 4-5 figures on a watch, however that is a possibility down the line (once mortgage is gone etc) as I've always found clocks and watches fascinating, not sure why.

So yea, budget at this stage is around £300
Not digital
Not too bulky
Not overly crowded face, less is more
Just time is fine, showing the date is good too but not a necessity
Prefer wind up or automatic but it's not a deal breaker if it uses a battery
Not plastic
Durable - Nothing over the top, but I don't like having to remember to take my watch off if I decide to do some DIY or change the oil in my car.

A couple of people at work mentioned Citizen watches

But I really would appreciate some input from here as I know there will be people here who know about this sort of thing :)

Mine is battery, the face is analogue with a second hand, it keeps perfect time It cost £15, yes, just £15. If the battery fails I won't bother to find a watchmaker - I'll just replace it.

I have one that is battery, analogue with a second hand, it is water resistant. It cost £15. If/when the battery fails I wont take it to watchmaker/store - I'll just replace it.

This is on a good deal at the moment: Orient Automatic

Or you may want to consider something like the Seiko Presage range:Seiko Presage (38mm)

Slightly different variant: Presage 2 (41mm)

I guess it depends the diameter face you want and if you're wiling to sacrifice depth for movement ;)

I own this watch with a black leather strap and it's stunning in the flesh: Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles Powermatic 80

Cheers, some nice suggestions

I like the look of this. Is there a way of choosing the strap separately? I like bracelet style straps and the above has a leather strap. There is one very similar with a bracelet strap but I prefer the design of this one. I know you can always buy straps separately, but would be nice not to have to

Tissot PRX Powermatic 80:

  • Automatic
  • 80 hr power reserve
  • Thin & comfortable
  • High quality materials
  • Looks/Feels expensive
  • £300

Love this. Has a bit of AP about it. Where is it £300? Looks like £500+ on Google?

The reason it has a bit of AP about is probably because AP has a bit of Tissot about it :p

Both designs started in the 1970s by both brands. The style is what you'd find back in the 1970s, and has continued to this day.

Yea, was looking at this one but it's nearer £500
Looks really nice

I'm no watch expert but I was in a very similar position, I got fed up of having to daily charge my Galaxy watch (I'll use it for running and cycling now) so thought I'd get a normal watch. I went for a seiko black edition Monster.
A very nice watch and I like but it's about 10 seconds fast each day.
I also have a Citizen eco drive which is now 24 years old (and still going strong), cost about £100 back then and is out by around 1 second a month. Like said I'm no expert so may vary watch to watch but it's my only niggle with the Seiko.
