Spec Me a Winter Hack

I've been thinking about a winter hack to keep me going through the damper months.

Rather than it be laid up over summer, I was thinking if I got something like a road legal crosser I could have some fun in the mud too.

I've had my eye on a few DRZ 400 SM's, but they all sold out of my price range. Plus they're pretty tall so I'd probably have to have them lowered.

I was thinking a 400cc, since that's the upper end of that particular road tax bracket. It's either that or maybe go for a 125/150cc...

I didn't really want to spend much more than £2k if possible.

Does anyone have any recommendations of for good road legal crossers?

Chee-ahz :D

If you're spending 2k then it's not a 'winter hack' you're after. A winter hack is a bike you buy for very cheap and care little about its degradation.

Sounds like what you want is a bike that won't mind the winter.

That aside, have a look at the Kawasaki KDX. They come with 2 stroke 125, 200 and 250cc emgines I believe.

As above, a winter hack is something you buy cheep, don't look after, and see if it'll last till next winter stuffed in your shed, either that or sell it :p.

I guess it's a little of that and a little of the other :p

I don't plan to put anywhere near as much time into looking after it as I do my Speedy. She's gorgeous ;)

My original budget was for around £1k, but I wasn't really seeing anything near that price. But then I was looking around for the likes of the DRZ's... I'm thinking now that they're way more bike than I'd want for this purpose.

I'd rather not go for a 2 stroke if possible.

I guess a cheap, fun, road legal crosser I can abuse a bit sums it up best :)

My winter hacks have tended to be utter sheds of all shapes & sizes, Divvy 600, CBX 750, kwaka 550 etc, not one of them over the years has cost me more than £750 to buy, as long as it comes with tax, MOT, good tires & brakes & starts n stops ok is all that i look for.

A successful winter hack is the kinda thing you can bin, pick up & kick the forks straight, & be on your way secure in the knowledge that any fresh dents will blend in to the overall crapiness of said hack. £2k definatley isn't winter hack money. :p

£2800. Bit over what I wanted to spend, but it's in great condition and I figure I can always sell it on if I find I don't make good use of it :)

Awesome! I got an S model for £800. Big upgrade from my 125, surprisingly it's starting to feel slow but I guess I'm just getting used to it. Mind you I'm rarely even able to cane the throttle on it properly! :p

Went to pick her up earlier. Too tall for me though :( I could just about manage, but at the risk of popping a hip out :p Guy was really nice and delivered in his van. Will have to get it lowered but oh well :)

2006, 3414 miles on the clock, never seen the wet, various mods including Monster graphics, Remus can, LED tail and indicators.

Will post a pic or two when I get chance to see her in the light of day :)

Ok, here's a couple I took this morning before taking her to the garage for lowering :p

Not my thing but a nice bike.

Get some proper tyres on there and go green laning! All these kids waste these bikes by making them "supermoto".
