Spec Me A WoW Only Rig

The wow engine is just bad that's all, the game used to run at 50fps 6 years ago and it still runs at 50fps now.

not in a firelands riad it does nto i defy you to prove it does, all you to do is scour the official blizard forums to tons of people running very high specs and still not getting above 15-20 fps in (25 man raids) as well as checking nvidia/ati forums.

And as for your statement of being 50fps 6 years ago i do not think so, have been playing wow since beta. its not badly coded, blizard tried to code it so even people whith not so good computers could play it. wich was a very good marketing strat to do, they are improving it now with direct x 11 ect but as i said very very few pcs will in a 25 man raid in firelands get over 20 fps

From when I used to play wow 25 man raids (spell detail) could be taxing and a good CPU was always a priority. I really would not bother with a SSD for it though. Apart from zoning into raids their are hardly any loading screens. The 1st spec should be fine.

My i5 750 @ 2.67 a 5850, 4 GB Ram a samsung spinpoint f3 and it ran excellently just for some reference.

i'm convinced parts of wow are badly coded

i know when i used to raid ICC 25 man id be fine for most of the place at 20-30FPS and then in some areas it would drop to 5-10FPS and it wasn't just me that was affected like this.

i was running a 9600GT and a Athon X2 2.2ghz 4Gb Ram at the time

but yer other than those bad areas 25 man raid encounters where fine at 20-30FPS with those specs at 1400x900 tho Graphics set to Ultra and view distance on about half.

don't think i ever managed to get 60FPS in a Raid even in the days of MC and BWL

An SSD is a very good boost for most games, including Warcraft. However, it's not essential for smooth game play especially in a budget build.

In response to DataVampire and people not getting 60fps in Firelands. My machine does it easily and its a 2 year old i7 build.

the thing that anoys me is that wow is a min 30gig install, 30 gig, that is insane. and yes while ssds will not give you a fps boost so to speak, it does however boost things like spawntimes, zoning from one area to the next, load times in 5 man dungions ect ect

I have all settings(ultra) at max also set at 1920x1080(ie full hd res) and nope i do ntogetthose fps

Butanyhow this is enough ofthis the op wantsa decent spec andiappologise for intruding on his posts

The thing is the game was launched back in the single-core CPU days. Nowadays even with the dx11 update and the so-called "support" for multi-cores, the games still essentially run on a single core. This is why a i3 2100 would be better than something like Phenom II X4 or Core2Quad overclocked to 3.8GHz in WOW, as the dual-core i3 2100 can deliver same performance as those overclocked quad-cores in games that use all 4 cores such BFBC2...what this means is that in games that use only two cores, the i3 2100 would still deliver 100% performance, whereas the overclocked, dated quad-cores CPU would only deliver 50% performance.

If you are using windows 7 ect you can set the infinity (how many proces wow will use)pressing control>Alt>Delete buttons(to bring up the task manager, select wow.exe set it from there, it also helps if you give wow a higher prioriy.

Another handy tip is more of a tip about your (ie lower ping)internet, do a search in google for leatrix latency fix, it should be on a website called wow interface.

Hope it helps.

A SSD isn't necessary if you just play in raid zones, but when you get into world pvp and the larger battlegrounds, every time your system lags when players come into view - you will notice the difference.

Back when I played WoW - when you meet the opposing 40 in the middle of AV and the 100 or so around Wintergrasp, a normal HDD would start thrashing the head looking for every texture data to load into memory.

I understand that a budget may not allow for SSD, I agree, it isn't 'essential', but do not neglect that MMOs in general are balanced around CPU/RAM/HDD with all 3 subsystems playing a part.

As previously mentioned WoW system requirements escalate upon what you want to do in the game, questing, dungeons, arenas, raids, battlegrounds.

just throwing it out there, I built a real budget PC for my girlfriends youngest brother just for WoW, threw in one of the OCUK refurbished 9800GT cards, stonking value for money, maxed WoW (i think the resolution was 1440 x 900 or something) obviously thats without the DX11 features but he didnt care. Best £35 graphics card ever.

Used to play WoW on a 8800GT (basically the same as a 9800GT) and used to max the game out back then, although using an old overclocked E5200 CPU some 25 man raiding would dip to 30 FPS during WOTLK period.

I did return for Cata with the system in my sig (using 4GB ram though) and it maxed the game out in DX11 @ 1650x1050 and the only time the FPS ever dipped to 25 - 30 FPS was in the middle of a busy major city at certain camera angles. I only ever did 10 man raids, but all were very smooth. I think an SSD would be a very good purchase and some fast ram, so all the game textures etc are loaded near instantly in those situations where a lot of stuff is happening on screen at once.
