Spec me an AA cover

Was on the phone to rejoin the AA for basic roadside assistance at £42. Would have been £30 but my car is over 10 years old. Then I get a carrot dangled in front of me by the salesgirl with breakdown repair cover instead. This includes roadside assistance, plus AA pay for any repairs (clutch, engine, battery, etc) up to £500 and I only pay £35 or the difference if it's over £500. It's £111 with that cover, which is internet discounted.

Last time I had my clutch replaced was about 2 years ago, at an AA approved garage. Quotes from garages at that time ranged enormously, up to £1000, but the AA garage (now called Halfords Autocentre) did it for £500. So looking at that AA repair option, it would presumably have covered it with me paying only £35.

Now I don't know what to do, lol. I was all happy to just get basic roadside at £42, but the breakdown repair cover is fairly tempting and now I can't decide. What should I do? Anyone here got breakdown repair cover? Is it as worthwhile as it sounds?

I have had it for several years and it's been excellent. It's restrictive in what it covers but it's very clear about that - if your breakdown meets its terms, they'll be fine.

Don't buy it over the phone though, buy it online and get about 60 quid Quidco cashback.

I paid £150 with £60 cashback last year for Roadside, Relay and Breakdown Repair Cover.

Nice one! I'd better join up at the Quidco site. I wasn't aware of being able to do a cashback purchase.

It says "Review the retailer's offers, then visit their site via the 'get cashback' button on Quidco and buy your items as you normally would. The price of the product on the retailer's page will be exactly the same as if would if you'd gone there direct." Then it says "Once you've made a purchase we'll track the amount of cashback you're due and send you an email to confirm this." Any way to find out how much the cashback is likely to be before making the purchase? Not that it matters much because any cashback is better than nothing.

What's the catch though, why are they giving me a cashback?

It will tell you on the quidco page, it's generally a fixed cash amount for short term promotional things (phone contracts do it a lot, buy an iPhone on £35 24m and get £150 etc.) or just a general percentage at a particular retailer.

It's a useful thing to use, so many things that you probably purchase are on there and the few quid here and there plus big one off sums soon rack up.

No catch for you, beyond the £5 a year that they take from your cashback (so nothing if you don't end up getting more than £5 back)

Only cashback offer I can find on the quidco site that seems to fit the bill is 'UK breakdown cover from only £30 + £19 cashback' but I don't know if I'll be able to do the parts & garage cover in that. Also, every single customer review on the quidco site gives it a poor rating, saying they have not received their cashback after 11 months.

Also, to proceed further after clicking on an AA cashback, I'm asked for BACS details, including my password. If that's a password for online banking, I don't have or do online banking.

What? How can you possibly have got any of that from that page. It's really quite clear what the offer is. Currently they are doing up to £70 cashback!

£70

INCREASED RATE EXPIRES IN A DAY

for Policies of £151+ (can pay in full or monthly)

You simply pick an AA product that costs £151 or more and you get £70 cashback. You build the product up on the AA site after you've clicked through - once you've added Parts and Labour, Roadside, Relay and potentially anything else you want to tip it over £151 you'll get your £70 cashback.

You do not need to give them your online banking password, you don't ever give ANYONE your online banking password! Once you've signed up they request BACS details to pay your cashback to you, thats all.

I use Quidco extensively and they always pay out - certainly I've had Cashback from the AA on two seperate occasions now. It takes 4-5 months to come through.

Ah right, excuse my thickness, I didn't read the column on the left where it says £19, £35, £45 and £70 cashback for different policy amounts. :p

Well, I was quoted £111 by the AA for the repair cover including roadside assistance, so that would be £45 cashback which I'm very happy with as it applies to policies between £101 and £150.99.

So what password do I give then as it's asking for one?

Bank account sort code
Bank account number
Account holder's name
Your password

Presumably your Quidco account password.

It is absolutely 100% NOT your online banking password or any password related to your bank.

Also, why are you not choosing Relay as well as Roadside? It's pretty much essential!

Ok, I've done the BACS now and yes, it is my quidco password. That had occurred to me, but I just thought it might be odd adding a website password when it's asking for bank details.

Ok, I've put together roadside, national recovery, I added home start too, and parts and garage = £164. Works out cheaper after £70 cashback (£94) than if I'd not added home start, as it would have been £143 but £45 cashback = £98.

Final (no doubt dumb :D ) question for now then. When quidco first took me to the AA page, there was a quidco logo half way down that AA page and a reference in the URL (AffiliateQuidco&awc..), but once I clicked on "You can also create your own breakdown cover package to suit you" and created my package, there's no quidco references anymore on the following pages or in the URL. So, I should assume I'm still buying via quidco? I'm ready to buy if so. This is the current page I'm looking at. http://i.imgur.com/u2Xmf.jpg

Yeah dammit, I should have checked out topcashback when kenai first mentioned it. Ah well.

So I've bought this £164 package now, got my AA membership number and an email from the AA. But no email is coming through from quidco to confirm, neither is there anything in 'My Quidco' it just says 'Your activity history will show here once you start transacting' wtf, I just transacted.

Can take a little while to track, if it's not showing after a week or so just submit a ticket. Not sure on timeframe of auto tracking, there will be a help section

It's not a particularly quick process, even from the quickest retailers, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for things to appear, it could be a few days before it even shows a record of anything.
