Posting this for a mate of mine since the verification process for the forums is taking some time and he cant post yet.

He is interested in an AMD build with the Crosshair III formula mobo and a 5870 gfx.No monitor, keyboard or mouse needed.

Pretty much a gaming pc that can sufficiently run games @ 1680x1050.

Doesnt have a set budget and he really wants the above mobo and gfx.

PS : No speakers needed either

thanks for the quick replies guys

he is not planning on overclocking any time soon,so is the stock cooler gonna be ok or does he need to get a 3rd party one?

the stock cooler will do, but if he can afford it a 3rd party one is always good, his system will run cooler and quieter
Edit: I was guessing his budget is pretty decent seen as how basing system around a 5870 and crosshair mobo

@ kenny : he is not on a set budget atm but i'd say about £1000.bear in mind his birthday is coming up and he might be willing to stretch that if it looks reasonable.he is not planning on changing any hardware on this rig for a couple of years after purchase, unless something dies obviously.

hmm,i'd totally forgotten about the os.he's got winxp atm but with windows 7 just around the corner it might be a good idea to get that as well.

@ kenny : any reason for choosing XFX over sapphire that others suggested?i looked at both cards and the clocks are the same.whats the reason for the extra £10 ? :)

Personal preference probably, i would have gone with which ever is cheaper.

I'm liking Kenny's spec combined with the Patriot. Quality memory.
Only thing I would suggest is looking at getting a 320GB single platter HDD as he is specing himself very highly. Why get such fast components if you're going to be using a hard drive that isn't fast? He can always get a 1TB drive later for storage, but for running an OS and necessary apps -320GB should be enough and with the right drive a little faster.
I would guess he's gone for XFX as the warranty return is in UK (i think) and they are pretty good with it. Only thing I'd look at changing would be the case. Don't get me wrong the 300 is a good all rounder, but nothing special for such an expensive build
