Now just before i ask, every thread I have read about these using a google search descended into bickering about legalitys. I dont care about legalitys. This doesnt make me an idiot. I had them on my old focus that not only had reflector headlights, it also had those old cloudy headlights. I adjusted the lights after fitting any no one ever flashed me, i didnt blind anyone i was following (followed friends, and asked them) etc.

So please dont trash my thread with an arguement.

There are many kits available and i need to know if its worth paying £140 for a hids4u kit or if a £40 ebay kit will do. I went down the ebay route last time however they were H4's and this time i need H7 for dipped and H1 for main beam.

Also, what do i do about sidelights, the color temp im going for is 6000k like last time :)

Oh and, I dont need CANBUS ones do I ? Normal are £80 on hid's direct, canbus are £150.

Thankyou.

I disagree, and that's a pretty stinky attitude. I often don't flash the cretins with badly focused HID kits because they are either blinding me from behind or because flashing would blind other drivers as well.

How can anyone possibly tell you if you need a CAN bus compatible kit when you haven't said what car you are fitting them to?

The ballast units on fleabay ones have been known to burst into flames and burn your car down (no joke!),

As for not caring about legalities, im not starting an argument - but i will jump on my high horse and say you sir are a moron :(

It really is about time police did something about crap HID retrofits :(

I had someone behind me where the glare was so big I could just about see his BMW badge. It really was that bad!

HIDs from the factory will be one of my requirements for my next car.

I've been noticing this more and more recently. Quite a few times I've been so dazzled by an oncoming cars dodgy HID lights that I've struggled to stay in my lane because I simply can't see it. I agree they should be outlawed.

On the other hand, I've done some interesting reading today about HID retrofits in projector lights and it isn't quite as clear cut as projectors being fine for HID's either, they can scatter just as badly. Seemingly HID bulbs are often longer than halogen ones so when you stick it in the halogen projector, the focal point of the light is now incorrect and the beam pattern is ruined.

Most of the people that glare me are people HID lights are Mercs or Audis with standard fit items, I can't really tell the difference between retrofit and standard fit. They all glare me.

a lot of the glare / poor spread / pattern is down to bad quality bulbs (which ebay kits usually are)

if the bulb is perfect, it produces the same kind of results as a stock halogen, even in a old reflector head lamp unit, but a ton more light :)

worth also getting quality ballasts, better startup time and more reliable / less likely to go into meltdown (and digital rather than analog junk)

the law as it stands (afaik) measures output of your lights in watts not lumens, as such as long as you don't exceed this you can mount the sun to the front of your car and never be prosecuted....

35w HIDs are awesome, 55w is just crazy bright (i have a m8 with one on his bike, a little too much tbh)

I agree, if you want them buy a car that had them properly fitted at the factory

doesn't really matter as long as you get a good HID kit.... guys with factory fitted units will hate you, but that's as they payed £££££ (mugged)

cheap kits produce poor results.. im 95% the old 'you must have a reflector head lamp unit' is not true any more (maybe years ago yes)

If you're putting them in correctly height adjusted (or auto leveling) projector lamps have a look at http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/ and http://www.hids4u.co.uk/. Also make sure you get a "UV Protected" kit as otherwise the bulbs could cause plastic lenses to melt (I can't see what car you've got) and obviously cause arc eye!

Depending on your car you might need a more expensive kit with digital ballasts and stuff to avoid bulb-out warnings etc. Don't go for "error code canceling" cables, they're just a power resistor of justice y0!

If you're putting them in reflector lamps just no. ALT+F4.

But they still don't work!!!
I don't care that they say "For Reflector Lenses".
The bottom line is that the company wants to make money, so they will sell any old **** and if they can do so by "convincing" you that retro-fit HIDs are fine in Reflector lenses then they will.

No Reflector Lens car should go anywhere near HID kits and I fully agree it is about time MOT stations and the police got involved.

If you've got projector lenses and the time to make sure the lights are correctly alligned then maybe you could consider it.
A mate of mine has upgraded his Octy vRS with after-market HIDs and they have been absolutely fine.
However he has projector lenses and the day he installed them kit he took it off to his local garage and had everything alligned correctly.
He has been flashed only once in the 4 months he's had them - when he was going uphill and was flashed by somebody coming downhill at the same time.

The JDM Civic Type-R had reflector lens and HID fitted as standard (before the facelift with projector lights). I suppose that's possibly becasue they have less restriction in JDM land.

When I get my MX5 I will buy or create some projector lens with a HID kit. Every car I've had has useless headlights and I drive many unlit country roads in winter. Even car with normal lights can glare you pretty badly and some HID fitted cars are a bit kinder. The problem is, people get the most powerful HID kits and that's where the problem lies. The lower wattage kits aren't too bad. Either way, I will be getting an MOT station to check and align the lights once fitted.

My Estima has factory HIDs and reflector lenses.

Lots of factory fit cars with reflectors and HIDS, but they key point is the reflectors have been designed to work with the different beam patten that HIDS produce!!!

So saying because some cars come out of the factory with reflectors and hids means a 10 yearold focus with reflectors will work fine with hids is wrong.

Most of the problem is peeps installing HID's in reflector type headlights, where as, in projector types they're usually ok. Plus, anything above 6000k is ridiculous, with their blueish purplish lights that look like a flykiller in the butchers :P

Its a passat, with projector lenses, hence why i dont care about everything above, like i said in my thread. Fox knows what car it is and still had a go.
