Spec me an ISP

So here's the deal, I'm currently with Nildram. Its costing around £24 a month and the service is ridiculously slow. I'm connecting at 2mbps despite the 8mbps advertised (I have decently low levels of noise so I don't understand why its capped...)

I occassionally use p2p and I know the traffic shaping measures are beneficial for gamers, but currently my torrents are downloading at 1kbps, which frankly is ridiculous!

I am looking to spend £20-24 and want a good service for gaming and some p2p use.

ADSL24 and Be broadband are ones I've looked at so far, also I could get sky broadband for free as I am a subscriber, but based on what I've read I'm somewhat skeptical about its performance!

Can anyone give me some tips? Is it likely that my new service will run at 2mbps also, or would using ADSL2 that some of these ISPs have give me a boost?

Also, I don't care about huge bandwidth, as long as there is at least 5mbps download, reaching its speed, low latency and reliability are more important to me. As for monthly allowance, 50gb+ preferred, though ideally more.

I'm in the same boat looking for a new ISP i've just got my MAC code from Pipex :D

Been paying 30quid a month there on aoffic epackage 2mb speeds have bene good but i want something faster now and i'm not planning on doing that with them.

SKy is my big option 16mb 2 people in my family have it and have good speeds. I think it' slike most ISP some peopel have good reports with them other's don't.

What puts me off it is if I run into problems, theres a 12 month contract isn't there, erk. I'd rather spend the £20+ and play safe I guess.

Hello,

Personally I recommend Be There. I migrated from Nildram to Be and never looked back. Nildram were once good but now have gone downhill. About Sky's Internet package, I have a relative who has that and I always receive opinions like "It always gets disconnected". However, other people might have had better experiences with them.

So why Be?

- £24: In your price ranges
- P2P is not blocked afaik
- Refer-a-friend scheme is excellent, I just joined with Be last week and already referred a friend, now awaiting a month's free usage of the Internet :)
- Customer support: Be team responding to online tickets is pretty effective and efficient.
- 3 month contract on Be Unlimited package BUT 12 month contract on Be Lite package

Be there, been around for quite a while although their service is still not available in some areas. I download quite a lot of films using torrents and I noticed the difference between a capped service and a non-capped service. Nildram are a right pain in the ***. Now that Tiscali has taken over, I suggest people run :)

The same relative I was talking about earlier has the Sky package with the 3 in 1. Television, telephone and Internet. If you are on a budget, you prolly will not get a better deal than Sky at the moment especially if you are always on the telephone to local rate numbers (01, 02) like my relatives :P

Yeah we just thought it was a good deal as at the moment we're paying

sky sportspackage £37.50
Pipex £29.99
Bt package 2 £16.50

Sky package with movies , off peak, 16mb ( up to) £ 53.50

I download a lot of things but mostly at night or early morning. Though i do have to say i like the the look of Be as well.

£83.99 for all that in the list. Personally, I would deffo go for the Sky package for £53.50. For about £30 less, you can watch more television for example, speak longer on the telephone etc, more economical imo.

Note: The reason why I did not go with Sky is because of their 12 month contract. I just don't like long-term contracts if you get my drift :) If you are fine with this, go with Sky :)

Enta. are great, no problems here during peak times, always get my full 6mb, and even off peak times are great to, mostly get my full 6mb's then as well, like ive been getting all day today so far. :)

oh noes i'm being capped. 5.4mb at the moment. time to find a new isp.... :p

and those poor buggers on central 4....

at least entanet are up front. if the speeds are going slow, it's for everyone's benefit. and no throttling depending on protocol. that's good enough for me. might not be full speed but at least i can use my capacity however i like. :)

How do you install Entatool?
I downloaded the .zip file and extracted all the files, when I click on the .exe it says
Component 'MSWINSCK.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

2. Component 'MSWINSCK.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file missing or invalid
For WinXP users: Please ensure you have extracted all the files from the ZIP to the destination folder. If this doesn't fix your problem, then copy the following files to your system32 folder (usually c:\windows\system32):
- MSCOMCTL.ocx
- MSINET.ocx
- msvbvm60.dll
- MSWINSCK.ocx
And then run the vbrunfix.bat
