Are the memory speeds worth paying the small extra for ?

That avexir RAM is nice, equal price but high speed + led stuff as well. To this question "Are the memory speeds worth paying the small extra for ?" I personally have used 2666Mhz and 1600Mhz for rendering and gaming, I saw no real difference.

I personally don't think the upgrade from sandy bridge to devil canyon is really worth £400, I'd consider maybe going for gpu upgrades now and then waiting until the next platform to see if we get a bigger performance increase. You could even pick up a cheap 2600k or 2700k if you think your 2500k will be a bottleneck

Why the upgrade? Are you just still gaming or are you streaming alit or doing big amots of video editing.

If just gaming the 2500k is still fine, just upgrafe the GPU.

The GTX 970 would be my choice. Outperforms the 290X mostly, while having more OC headroom and less power consumption.

dropping in a 3770K would get you pcie 3.0 and would be better for a multi gpu setup.

About 95% as good as a haswell I7 and probably <£100 after selling the 2500k.
