Yes i know im saving for Ibiza, and i want a 24" moniter, but i can afford 1 OR the Other.

So, £250 budget, as per moniter thread.

Wanting an SSD thats fast, to replace my Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500Gb main drive, its only got an OS and a couple of programs on, so its only 43Gb in size.

Also how would i transfer EVERYTHING from seagate to SSD to boot from SSD without having to re-install windows, the Seagate is my System Drive if that helps.

The Samsung ssd 64gbs are the best bang for buck at the mo - that would be the one i recommend. Can get them for £115.

Could get 2 for £230 and raid 0 them.

A big thread about it - have a look and i'm sure you'll like what you see.:)

I have one and best buy I've made for a while - and with 2 in raid you'll be flying.

With your other q m not sure. You'll have to have a ghost program and then go from there I'm sure.

SSDs arent so hot on writing so imo you would need to have or keep the hdd you currently have and use that as a scratchdisk and it'll just make the system a bit speedier and less use of the writing side on the ssd.

By spending far more time and effort than installing windows, only to end up with a job that feels bodged. Just reinstall windows, its not hard

p.s. ssd's are very very good

And the advantages of raiding 2x SSD's? how long to boot into Vista 64bit from turning PC on?

2xssds would then mean in theory twice the read and write speeds.

I haven't timed my boot up but it's a lot quicker.

With one sammy 64gb my boot time from the POST screen is 25 seconds. Although to be fair the rest of my system is uber-ninja-pirate-eagle fast :D

Well atm it takes around 45 -60seconds on my Seagate. But to be fair, my 4Ghz E8400 should help right?

A bit of googling lol. Samsung MLC and the price maybe .....- we can't mention the competitor as per forum rules.:)

2x30Gb Vertex in raid 0 - best option right now...

priciest and best performance option maybe but i kinda disagree with them being overall the best option, but you do usually get what you pay for.

get a samsung for £115 (not sure why they've gone up now by £15 i blame everyone on OCUK all of a sudden rushing out and buying 1-2 a piece :) me included) or get 2 samsungs and a 4GB OCZ ATV flash drive for just under £300, raid the drives and install vista onto the OCZ flash drive, set the bios to boot from usb and have some seriously fast fun with installing vista onto an SSD raid 0 configuration.

I'm very happy with my 4 x 64GB Samsungs SSDs in RAID0 but I think it's a bit of a myth about them magicing 1min+ boot times down to 30 seconds. I was running 4 x Hitachi 250GB TK7 drives in RAID0 before which are pretty quick. My boot time was around 55 seconds from when the windows scrolling load bar appears in Vista64 to a usable system.

With my Samsung SSDs in RAID0 this is now about 40 seconds.

Still a noticable improvement, this is with the SSD tweaks applied and fully alighned (install from scratch). Also I have quite a lot of peripherals\components attrached (4 optical drives, 2 extra HDs, 1 external USB drive, LAN connection and my NAS mapped to its own drive).

I'm not saying it's rubbish but I think there's a little bit too much hype surrounding these things as wonder drives!

So not true in so many ways. I'm sorry but don't the Vertex drives have serious performance issues with their jmicron controller? They're completely overpriced too.

The best SSD at the moment for your money is easily the Samsung 64GB. Even if it has gone up to £115. It's still in a league of its own for price and performance. I will say performance but only when they are used in a RAID0 configuration.

That's the whole point with the Samsung SSDs. On their own they can't compete with the expensive ones, but as a RAID0 pair or more they are as fast as the expensive ones but provide far more storage for a cheaper price.
