Spec me an SSD

don't the Vertex drives have serious performance issues with their jmicron controller? They're completely overpriced too.

thats exactly the same thing that put me off buying them also but if i remember right is'nt it the Apex series that use the Jmicron controller?

The beauty of the samsung drives is that they offer a perfect ballance (as far as SSD's go at the minute) between price/performance/space and lets face it, it's not like they are all that slow, maybe in SSD terms they might be but they are still superior to any mechanical drive but largely down to their access times (imo). Probably the only thing that is detrimental to samsungs SSD's is that they only come in two volumes which is 64GB and 128GB.

Also how would i transfer EVERYTHING from seagate to SSD to boot from SSD without having to re-install windows, the Seagate is my System Drive if that helps.

I recently found myself reinstalling windows quite a bit, so I wrote myself a couple of batch files that basically save my program settings and restore them on the fresh install. Keeps things like browsing history as well as preferences. It's not pretty but it does the job. If you're interested I'll post the code.

With one sammy 64gb my boot time from the POST screen is 25 seconds. Although to be fair the rest of my system is uber-ninja-pirate-eagle fast :D

I should make a you tube video of XP loading in Parallels.. stupidly fast the loading screen gets two of the three blips onto the progress bar and the password box appears!

So not true in so many ways. I'm sorry but don't the Vertex drives have serious performance issues with their jmicron controller? They're completely overpriced too.

1. Vertex do not, and never have used a JMicron controller - you're thinking of the Solid/Apex series. It uses a different company's controller (the company has a daft name that like ililiiinux so I can't be bothered to find it).

2. The performance (including write) outclasses the other drives with the exception of the Intel SLC SSD. For 100,000USD I could get a RAMSAN and it would kick the SSD's butt.. depends on the requirements..

3. Yes Vertex is expensive but as is always the case with initial bleeding edge non-mainstream hardware. However in terms of money verses what it's offering compared to the rest of the SSD pack it's pretty good.
One killer is that you can flash the firmware - which you can't on the Intel.. so it may be expensive but it's infinitely better for supporting issues.
