Well, the approach of asking for general information didn't work, so let's try this instead...

Current Spec:

3500+
Abit AN8 Ultra
1GB PC3200
160GB HDD
X800XL
19" TFT

Say, for £400, looking to move to either Duo or Quad, mild overclocking could be entertained, gaming not an issue so the X800XL could stay.

What sort of gear should I be looking at?

I'm assuming that your X800XL is PCI-E? If so then this should do, you need to re-use your case and hard drive/optical drives but it will also be very overclockable if you wish. :)

Would it need the PSU or would my 480W Tagan be ok? It's only 40W less and was a well regarded PSU at the time. Or will it be missing connectors?

Also, seeing as that RAM looks cheap as chips, would 4GB be worth it considering I use a lot of image editing apps and a lot of CAD programs for Uni?

edit - and yes the X800XL is PCI-E

If your Tagan is ATX 2.0 compliant then I'd go with it for the moment, it is still a decent PSU but do remember that PSUs get less efficient with age.

4gb Ram might well help but be aware that if using a 32bit OS you won't see a full 4gb, more like 3.5gb. :)

Indeed, I was aware of the 32bit limitations.

The PSU was purchased around October 2005 and I think it is ATX2.0...

Anyone else or are people only interested in these sorts of things when there is a budget of about £2000 and they can go mad with SLI 8800GTXs and Triple Quad Cores etc.? :p

nah its not that its just SPW is usually so damn quick at posting a spec and generally you cant do much better :).

only thing i'd add is make sure the cooler spec'd can fit into you're case :D

CM Centurion 530 or 531, I forget.

It currently houses an arctic cooler 64 pro atop my 939 board with a fair amount of room to spare.
