OcUK Network Gurus,

Going to Uni and need to set up a network within my room. Only one Ethernet port is supplied and I may only be allowed one MAC address per room.

On the network I want to have my PC, laptop, printer and maybe a server/NAS. May connect wireless devices so would like that.

So looking for a cable router that allows me to set/spoof MAC address, proxy and wireless.

Thanks

p.s black one please :)

Okay, it's not black but how about this?

Reasons:

  1. It isn't cool or expensive so it's unlikely to get stolen, and you won't care too much when someone inevitably pours beer over it.
  2. If you’re in halls you only need a wireless signal to go about 10 feet. It might be nice to have wireless access around the entire block, but lots of other people will have the same idea and the airwaves will be horribly congested.
  3. It should be capable of spoofing a MAC address (it would actually be quite hard to find one that isn't).
  4. TP-Link kit has always worked fairly well in my experience.

Behind a proxy? There’s going to a room and connection to their network. Where is a proxy going to fit in to this arrangement?

Ah sorry, I was thinking if I had a switch with a printer connected, others would be able to access it :p

Router fixes that as it puts me in my own little network. However, if the Uni Halls is using proxies, I would like a router to manage the settings for me.

Would all of those Netgears be ok for this?

The connection is almost certainly going to be going via one or more 'proxy' servers, if it wasn't they wouldn't be able to limit/monitor your activities.

I'd be amazed if the proxies that are in place aren't transparent. Even if they aren't a router isn't going to help you manage the settings (quite prepared to corrected on this).

For your needs anything with an Ethernet WAN port and at least one aerial should be fine.

To answer your question that's no longer there...

If you ignore the ones that are DSL routers, then yes.

The biggest difference you'll see between normal 'domestic' routers is on the wireless side. IMO spending extra on better wireless when you're unlikely to see much benefit (due to massive local congestion) wouldn’t be worthwhile.

If you provided some information about which University (and which halls) you’re talking about you may find someone on here with first-hand experience.

Im going Bournemouth Uni, Chesil House. The halls are still under construction, so unless members of OcUK can time travel, dont think they can help, hehe :p

Probably going for this:

N300 WIRELESS ROUTER WNR2000
It does have the WAN Ethernet port you specified, so looks like im good to go.
