Quick spec me thread.

I've got a bit of cash to throw in the car so will be looking to upgrade audio.

Will get Halfords to fit it as I don't fancy doing the work myself so will need to be buying items from them.

Currently got a couple of Alpine speakers in the front which I got cheap off my mate. (link) - any good or worth replacing?

Speaker size is 16cm / 6.5".

Budget is £250-£300 which would include head unit, speakers, amp, sub (if needed).

Any help is much appreciated :)

I had a similar request on a different forum a year or so back and Pioneer were recommended in almost every reply. They do seem to hit that sweet spot of price/sound quality which I think most non-audiophiles are looking for.

As with all audio gear it's very easy to spend silly money on amazing stuff but for lower budgets - and mine was one - Pioneer definitely worked out well.

Difficult to advise on the speakers without knowing the specific model you have.

I would actually think an Alpine HU or a Pioneer would suit your requirements. I have had two Alpine HU in my last two cars and they have been brilliant and understated, but Pioneer are just as good!

Yeah just gonna replace default head unit with a Pioneer MVH-1400UB and see how much quality improves. Has 2 pre-outs so if I want to upgrade in the future then it's possible.

Your budget is too low.

Either reassess the budget, buy second hand, or buy one thing at a time and wait until you can upgrade the rest of it.

This. Car audio is very expensive and the results are poor. Get a better head unit if you want more features and leave it at that.

Disagree. Depends what you are after (you won't get a decent double din with satnav for that) but you can put together a perfectly good system on that budget which will easily surpass your average OEM in features/sound quality, as I have done recently in my Gt4. Just requires a bit of ebay scanning:

Hertz DSK165 component speakers: £65
JVC KD-X50BT H/U £70
JBL GTO4000 amp: £35
JBL GTO804 8" subwoofer: £40
MDF for custom sub box: £15
3hrs on a sunday afternoon.

So that was all brand new then? As the OP states he is buying his items from Halfords, so you obviously wouldn't be talking about second hand items, especially since someone has already suggested that second hand would be required to get anything approaching half usable for that budget.

If you don't want to fit car audio yourself, don't go to Halfords. Find yourself a nice car audio independent that knows what they're doing.

As other's have said though, budget is too low for HU, Amp, Sub and speakers. Spend £200+ on HU and then re-evaluate whether you want/need to the other components. Yes, you can get amps and subs from Halfords in that price range but they will be poor quality and likely from Mutant or Fli or some other junk brand.

Fitting audio isn't hard and can be good fun so I'd really encourage you to go the 2nd hand route and build/fit it all yourself. It's very rewarding.

Those alpines are 4"' if you have 6.5" mountings at the front then I'd suggest finding larger component speakers.
A small sub is needed, car audio always sound a bit tinny in comparison to home hifi. An 8" woofer generally sounds 'faster' than a wobbly 12" one.

Halfords can install cheaply because they have just ripped you off in buying their tat, source nicer gear from eBay and get someone else to install. If your car has an ISO socket then this is often just a matter of plug A into socket A, if you can build a PC you can install ICE.

Would probably up the budget to £450-£500 then.

I'm not expecting to fully kit it out, but is it worth just doing the front? i.e. components, sub/amp, headunit?
Are active subs any good? Space is quite an issue in my car!

After a quick look at the rear door speaker mounts, seems like it'll involve an angle grinder to get any speakers in! No parcel shelf for speakers too.

Will probably ask a friend to help me install them myself then, rather than be limited to Halfrauds.

There is no real need for rear speakers at all TBH.

I used to be seriously into car audio and a friend won the UK newcomer award with a simple setup of component fronts and rear sub. The positioning of the fronts becomes a little more critical but actually the sound staging of a simple pair of stereo is quite a clear refreshing sound. It will be lousy for rear passengers though, so if you have rear passengers maybe discard that approach.

OEM speakers are horrible in just about every car, they are literally £1 items.

Replacing a head unit is normally a 5 minute job, although a few cars takes longer as you have to get behind other parts of the dash.

Its worth getting a view on how good the existing head unit actually is, you could then spend the budget on a decent 4 channel amp, and all the wiring etc, along with a pair of nice components for the front, and a sub for the back. Run 2 channels for the front and a bridged pair for sub.

For most peope the biggest issue is the initial setup, finding where to route the cables etc, eg you need a fairly decent EARTHED power cable running to the amp(s), a cable from the head unit to the amp(s) along with some RCAs (probably). Then speakers from the amp(s) to the speakers. Thats quite a rewire job for most people and they get nervous with the power cable.
My first change was a head unit and rear 6x9s, I did this myself and it took a whole day getting the old head unit out, routing the cables etc. I then went up and had a simple upgrade with amp done for me and that took about 5 hours by a specialist.
Later I became friends with the guy who did the install and my car basically became a demo vehicle, test bench, but nothing touched the time taken to install decent cables well from scratch over the car.

Best day was installing 8", 4" and tweater components into custom door builds in the front. No one ever got into my car without going wow at the size of the front speakers. Although I actualy got a better sound later on by switching to just 6.5s and tweaters in those same door builds.

I would second a specialist over halfords any day. Just go it give them an idea of budget and ask for suggestions.

People always talk down on active subs but for the space they take up can be quite effective, yes they are not going to be as good as stand alone amps and subs but for simplicity in limited space they are not bad.

If I had a half decent OE head unit (and most tbh arent that bad), on that budget it would be amp and the best pair of speakers I could afford for the front. Fade the rear out completely and use the high level input to the amp from the existing head unit. That way you have some decent speakers and a decent amp, you haven't bought lots of cheap components you have bought a couple of good ones. You can then add more as you decide (if you decide), such as a head unit.

I say have a crack at it yourself, although a novice you will likely do a far better job than anyone at halfords. Car audio isn't difficult, you'll just have to pull bits of trim and carpet out so you can feed wires around the car. I recently fitted a load of car audio in my car (new speakers, amp, sub and all the wiring) it took a while but it was easy.

This (again)

For that money what you buy will probably sound worse than the standard stereo.
Forget it until you can spend that sort of money on EACH item.

Trust me when I say it's quite addictive. :D
This 306 was two weeks old at the time. :D
