Hi guys,
My grandad has decided he wants me to build him a computer, I have a corsair 540 which he loved, but I figure since he is only using it to play pre installed chess and browse the Internet, it would be overkill and a 240 would suffice and still look pretty.

The budget is around £500, the only thing that's decided on is the 240 case. I've never built mini or micro before and don't really know which is best etc.
so if you could help that would be great!

YOUR BASKET
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £77.99
1 x Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow PC Case - Black (CC-9011070-WW) £69.95
1 x SK Hynix 128GB SSD SH910A SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive (HFS128G32MNB-2201A) £49.99
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £49.99
1 x Gigabyte H81M-D2V Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 350W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £34.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Fury Black 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Single Channel Kit (HX316C10FB/4) £32.99
1 x BitFenix Alchemy Molex to 3pin x3 Fan adaptor 7V 20cm - Black £4.99
Total : £371.48 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Fan adapter because motherboard does not bring enough fan headers, and 7v will keep the fans quieter. Won't require 12v to cool that set-up.

Does that have everything he'll need? Already have monitor/keyboard/mouse? Wireless needed?

Doesn't sound like he needs a lot of storage so just a 120GB SSD in there.

Aesthetic add-ons (stock cooler would be fine cooling-wise). Build has a lot of black, and white SSD goes in the back compartment so little orange cooler as focal point, and leds to illuminate as the 240 has window:

YOUR BASKET
1 x NZXT HUE RGB LED Controller - Black £39.98
1 x Xigmatek Apache III CD903 CPU-Cooler - 92mm £10.99

White 240 version is same price:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Carbide Series Air 240 High Airflow PC Case - White (CC-9011069-WW) £69.95

Both out of stock just now, could ask OcUK when they expect more.

Uh, may be failing here, but the LED strip only works with Phanteks cases doesn't it? As the 4 pin connector for them connects to an LED controller on the Luxe and the controller doesn't come with the LEDs?

Thanks for the list . That's great, I really wasn't sure on which motherboard etc. Thanks.

He definitely wants a 240 in white, hopefully it will be in stock soon.

He does need a monitor, I can handle sorting a keyboard and mouse etc. I was going to get the nzxt hue lighting kit, if it fits in there I don't know. He will also need a dvd drive which I will probably go for blu ray.

I wasn't aware of that. You're correct. Thank you, Shivy. Will edit.

There are no optical bays on the case but you can easily leave the Hue module somewhere in the back and open back-panel to change colour if he fancies something different after a while. Could get external BluRay for easier access.

Another thing - I hope the motherboard was manufactured recently so the Pentium-K works on it straight-off. Chances are it will but there's a little risk involved. To avoid risk, go for an original Haswell (non-refresh) chip, or change motherboard to a more expensive H97 or Z97. OcUK may be able to find out for you, though (which BIOS version it has).

Oh I did not realise it had no optical bays. Damn I don't know if that's a deal breaker or not because things will get a bit cluttered if he needs an external one.
Damn maybe I should just get him the full size case? It must have a big window because that was the main attraction for him, he's an ex lathe worker/engineer and loves seeing all the insides etc.

I must have been one in a past life. :D

?

And here are alternative CPUs compatible with the original BIOS on series 8 Intel motherboards:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £89.99
1 x Intel Pentium G3430 3.30GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £65.99
1 x Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £41.99

this build is all about looks rather than performance, as its for a very light user who just wants something cool in his man cave lol so ill look into that, but it will be tight with the budget I have for it.

screw it I'm sticking with the 240, I will get him an external dvd drive if he needs it lol it just blows all the others out of the water for looks

Personally, with no GPU or watercooler, i think the 240 will look pretty dull, just a big expanance of space... Just saying.. :)

I'd be looking at a non-windowed case personally.
