Bang for buck, tell him to get a desktop! easily get a mid range build for that!

As for streaming, use a chromecast with plex, or Roku stick, and wireless stream to it.
For a gaming laptop with enough grunt to play modern games you'll need closer to £1000!

I think he was quite keen on it being portable so he could sit and watch stuff if his missus is using the TV.
I will show him this though, I did try and convince him that a desktop would be a better choice the other day but with no prevail.

What sort of games does he play? If its LoL or Warcraft you can often get away with a much cheaper laptop. If its crysis 3, then he'll need to up the budget!
I once got a £400 lenovo with a low nvidia GT GPU. but it happily managed left for dead, half life 2, and starcraft on lower graphics settings.

I have spoken to him a bit more. He doesn't seem to know what he wants.
I think one of the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series may suit his needs. Anything with a 750M GPU, 3.0Ghz Processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1tb HDD will do him. There seems to be a load of laptops around with a similar spec so I will just give him links and leave him to it I think.
Told him not to go to those purple shirt lifters, that's the most important thing.
