I currently have a Garmin Forerunner 910xt which I primarily use for swimming indoor and running, its great but I never use the heart rate monitor chest strap as it just feels awkward. I also never (or hardly ever) sync it as it uses the Ant+ dongle and the software is pretty cack although the Garmin connect iPhone app is good once it has uploaded.

Is there a watch that offers bluetooth sync and wrist heart rate monitoring even in water? I don't mind spending a few hundred because I currently use the 910xt every day.

The new one ideally should be as easy to use (stop, start, reset, automatically picks up satellites when outdoor) have a 200m swim vibration alert and above all else, be comfy to wear for long periods.

I don't mind looking at other brands either such as Suunto

Have you looked at the new Garmin Fenix 3 HR which has optical HRM? Or the Vivoactive HR? However, optical HRM doesn't work very accurately under water, I suspect that any watch will have the same issue and I think Garmin has even disabled the optical HRM for swimming.

Not sure what's awkward about using the chest strap? If you have the standard HRM it won't work properly underwater anyway. The HRM-swim will work well though, much cheaper and more accurate than any new watch, I'm willing to bet.

I've been looking at the vivioactive HR (released this month?) although I worry about its durability.

My mate has the fenix 3 and it certainly ticks all the boxes but it is rather large. Not much help, but I, going to order 2 or 3 and go from there. They will have those sort of specs tho.

I've been looking at that too but waiting to see some side by side pictures so I can gauge size
