Please spec me my a first car, I have a budget of 3.5-5k and no idea what to look for . . . any advice will be great appreciated :)

Spend less than half of that budget on the car and use the rest to pay the insurance in one lump sum.

Avoid Fiesta, Corsa, Clio, Saxo and Punto...insurance will rape you on all of them.

Check out bigger cars, you'll be surprised how low the quotes are on them as opposed to a smaller car.

I've tried this whole idea of get a quote on a mondeo or nissan primera. It doesn't work (well for young drivers anyway). My quotes were even more than what I was getting for a 1.4 Fiesta.

I used several online insurance companies and also the meerkat one.

No idea how people manage to get cheaper insurance on a big car, I must be doing something wrong.

What's insurance like for new drivers on a MK1 Focus these days?

I remember getting my 2.0 petrol insured for £740 ish for 10 months (to get my first year's NCB quickly). That was with Admiral.

The only time I've notice cheap insurance so far is when the car is really small, really weak and really ugly.

You cant be picky for your first car (unless your daddy is mr money bags, then you can be :)), your still learning to drive, no point having something decent that you will eventually dent and likely crash. When you have a few years then buy a car you can be proud of.

That doesn't mean to say you have to have a piece of junk an old.. focus, clio, punto, polo, saxo, golf.

For insurance depending on your family situation there are a few things you could do. If you family has a business of some form, you could get in with fleet insurance, it would probably cost a few hundred to add you and the car the the fleet.

Another alternative is one of those insurance companies that has specific driving rules for you, generally you cant drive after 11pm and you have to have their GPS device fitted in your car, which brings insurance down a lot as well.

Anyway, what ever you do, stay safe and don't think you are a great driver as many new drivers do, it never ends well.

No it's not...?

Depends who the registered owner is. If you read the small print, if you are the main user of the vehicle you must be the policy holder.

Registered owner = policy holder, tends to be the law within insurance...

Taking out a policy with someone else as the main driver (when in reality you are the main driver) is called insurance fronting and is illegal.

Take a look at 306/xsara hdi.....around 1k to buy, rock solid engines and insurance isn't too bad....since I've been driving in 2008, its been cheaper for me to insure my 306 estate than a 1.1 106....mods included.

Also when getting quotes, ask what's included as some don't like alloys....or even aftermarket stereos.

To clarify and hopefully be helpful to the OP in reducing insurance costs, you are legally able to add someone (e.g. a parent) as a named driver which may reduce your premium.

When I started driving I looked around at hatchback quotes and was getting 1500 quid replies. Then for giggles asked around for quotes on a diesel vectra estate which came in at 1200. So that's what I went with for my first car. Sure, it was a diesel vectra. But it was a great first car instead of a 1.2 petrol corsa or fiesta.

Pretty much every youngster goes for the little hatch back which has pushed the prices way up on them. I could not believe how much a golf was to insure :/. pick something a bit outside of the box and you can usually get a few nice surprises. at 18 i had a celica which was pretty nice compared to the little hatches my friends were driving at the time.

Fronting is fraudulent as already stated, no two ways about it.

What you can do in some cases is have a parent as the policy holder with the child properly named as a main driver (or at least you can do this as a couple, I assume parent/child would be ok too). You won't build any no claims and i suspect the policy would be just as expensive anyway
