He's just got an Athlon 4800+
AMD690gm-m2 motherboard

I have no idea what they are but he needs graphics, memory and power supply

I know he probably should have got a core2duo but he's not dropped too big of a knacker has he?

edit - should i tell him to sell them and get a setup for about £400 with an 8800GT?

He said about £300. Would the motherboard and processor he has already got be fine with the spec from waster?

I think it will be ok but the chip will bottleneck the GPU a bit if I am correct :)

if his case is fairly old will he need a new one of them too?

If his case is ATX compliant then it should be fine, however you might have to check that the graphics card will fit in, some older cases weren't designed with new longer cards in mind.

The X2 should overclock a bit but how far depends on the motherboard, CPU cooler, Ram (which is fine for overclocking) and airflow in the case.

It runs at 2.5ghz. Would the 4800+ overclock to 2.8 or is it a non clocking chip?

I have to admit I don't know much about the newer AMD processors but I guess it will do 2.8Ghz. It's just that it is not THAT fast enough so that the GPU can take full advantage, I think, at least I think that's what I heard on these forums. But someone else has to confirm that. If no one confirms then ignore me I guess

on top of the £250 for the stuff waster listed, how much more would a core2duo & motherboard cost? (that would be good enough to justify it over the 4800+ )

Have you seen the overclock you can get out of them, considering thier stock speeds?

Theres only two intel procs worth buying, the e2180, and the q6600.

so do you think its worth telling him to spend £380 (£80 more than budget) to get the core2duo mentioned or stick with the 4800+ and save £50?

No I haven't..

My post was more to get you going than anything..

I consider this a success :D

I can't believe this is what our freindship has been reduced to.. Chatting on a forum when you only live a mile away ;)
