My parents have a Panasonic TV and a Panasonic DVD/HDD recorder.

My mum bought Downton Abbey on Blu Ray (rather than DVD) and has no way to play it. We decided we would get them a BD player for Crimbo :)

Ideally Panasonic, as they make use of the one remote and Viera stuff.

Doesn't need to be expensive either as they only play back through the TV audio

Panasonic BD players are quite cheap
Panasonic BD/HDD players are too expensive imho
Why not keep the existing gear and suppliment with a panny BD player?
Panasonic DMR-BWT735EB
Full HD 3D Blu-ray Recorder with 1TB HDD Twin Freeview+HD Tuner Recorder £429

Panasonic DMP-BD79EB-K Multiregion DVD
Smart Network Blu-ray Disc Player £89

I'd echo the above.

Unless you absolutely positively definitely can't have two boxes under the TV, then adding Blu-ray player instead of replacing the existing DVD/HDD recorder makes far more sense.

If changing the player/recorder is the only option, then there's the Panasonic DMR-PWT500EB 320GB HDD TV Recorder with 3D Blu-ray Player and Twin Freeview HD Tuners. This is the choice if you aren't bothered about archiving on to disc. The disc side is a Blu-ray player only, not a recorder. The unit price is around £200

Hi-Def home recording on to Blu-ray disc is a bit of a mess. There's only a handful of HD channels available on Freeview, and the recorders don't support recording from other boxes. So any thoughts about hooking to say Sky HD and archiving from there are knocked on the head straight away. :( This kind of stunts the appeal of a Blu-ray recording twin tuner box. The only advantage left is archiving lots of source material on to one disc because Blu-rays hold more than DVDs. Whether you want tot put all your eggs in one basket like this though is a personal choice. I know it would make me nervous.

Hell, if it really comes down to it then just buy her Downton Abbey on DVD and sell the Blu-rays. That's an even cheaper solution. :D

Thanks guys, thanks also Lucid. I was hoping you might pop in :)

My parents are old, they don't like change, and actually I could argue that they don't use the HDD part of the DVD recorder as it is (although that is attached to their virgin box, because they have a virgin box that doesn't have all the pause / rewind / record stuff). To be fair, they also have a VHS player.... I guess, plug sockets depending, one more box wouldn't hurt :)

Are the recommendations for BD players only still valid then?

As has been said if they only have the one BD disc and are not into films and surround sound return or sell the BD disc and get them a dvd copy

or get them a BD player if they intend to purchase more BD discs in the future
a combined player and hdd is too much for what it is and if one part dies you end up with a lack of 2 devices
my opinion anyway :)
