Hi all

Many moons ago when I got my first car I was gifted a screwdriver set to do the basic maintenance jobs etc. The Phillips ones have finally rounded off too much and I've just got in from fixing a gate and I'm annoyed enough that I'm eyeing up my credit card for some new ones. When I've bought the odd new Phillips in the past it's been so soft steel it might have been playdoh, so spec me a brand or set that's worth buying please.

Thanks in advance

I can recommend Wera screwdrivers.

However might I ask, do you have any power tools that use bits? Such as an impact driver or electric screwdriver (or even a drill that you use for inserting fixings?).

If so it might be more prudent to get a bit holder and just buy some Philips bits, that way you only need to own a single set of bits and you can use them with your impact driver/drill + handheld bit holder.

Something like this:

And this:

Those bits are impact rated so a bit pricy. If you don't have an impact driver you can just get normal ones which are much cheaper.

I also own Wera Chiseldrivers which are great if you ever need to whack your drivers.

I use ratcheting screwdriver bit sets, the best ones are German usually but they have gone up and up in price so much over the last decade that i use cheapo ones and the steel is generally good enough for home use.

Screwfix have a bunch of sets, just look through the reviews from builders etc.

If you want proper hard wearing - get hammer through Halfords Professional.

Wera are generally well regarded. I have some Stanley ones and they're good too.

Like others have said, just getting a bit holder/driver and using a bit set is a good option. Having a ratcheting action is also very useful.

If you want to do some serious research, there's a list of tool brand websites here.

Not thought about the bit holder route. Definitely worth looking at. The wera brand looks like a possible good solution. Thanks for the curve ball idea.

Although I have a lot of Stanly screwdrivers, I also use the Wera handle and separate bits solution! Then I just buy whatever bits. DeWalt, Sabrecut... any branded name.

It's really hard to get a comprehensive set of screwdrivers.

Is there a full set that would include Phillips, flat head, torx?

Maybe it's just better buying separates.

Which is fine, but then where do you get a good case from?for example I have a set of torx screwdrivers which tops out at t30 I think. It didn't come with a case so they are just loose in my toolbox and when I need them I have to rummage for them. And what happens if I needed a t40? Id have to then buy a separate one just for that.

Maybe it is better having interchangable bit sets instead rather than whole screwdrivers.

Yeh this is a good point but what I would say is the wera sets have 1 or 2 handles then a whole collection. You can go whatever route you require. I wouldn’t want separate screwdrivers for each one. The storage alone would be mad! Thankfully they are all in good cases.

Stainless VDE

VDE

Non VDE

You can also get bigger sets with more bits of required or non vde as ratchet sets but I don’t think any of them do TX40 though. Must be a unique one that is rarely used and you’d not find it in many sets and you’d have to get in on its own. Same as PH3

Another one for Wera - Started years ago and bought them one at a time -Now a set is cheaper -I have the ones with green handle - Also have a Wera bit screwdriver and that has come in very usefull.
Have to say they are overkill for the work I do and think other brands are just as good and a bit cheaper.

If you spend a load of money you only spend it once.

I've got a Halfords Advanced set and can't complain for the price

Just in case you're unaware, there is a difference between Phillips and Pozi screwdrivers, so make sure you get the correct one :)

I use a combination of Wera and Bahco for my main tools. Had both for over a decade but I mostly do lighter work nowadays so they don't see as much usage as they once did.
