Spec me please (Ordered Today)

Hi People,

I am in dire need of a new PC my spec at the moment is a P3 933Mhz :D , ouch i hear you say!!

It can just about play Counter strike source! (very badly 15fps) I also use several music progs e.g Reason/ fruity loops etc and the machine can just not hack it
After a lot of head scratching searching for this and that, this is what I have come up with.

I already have 2 dvd drives LG 4167b and LG HSA22 so I dont need any more of those.

Posts on other forums say dont bother with the WD raptor boot/gaming hdd, because the benefits are so small. What do you guys think?

Can i fit everything easily in that case as I have read about room in tight cases and the Arctic Cooling Freezer being a problem.?

Also need a sound card any suggestions?

Welcome!

Yes it looks fine but if you are looking to save a bit of cash with minimum / no performance lost then go with the spec by hp7909 and keep the GTX.

Thanks for the welcome and comments guys.

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black £48.99

I like the look of this but like the silver better

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £137.99

I looked at this but read some bad things about it, is this not the case any more?

I think I will stick with the GTX :D

Yeah I really like that PC-7 as well, planning to get one myself.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but as Gibbo said in one of the threads:

Hi there

Most people tend to post about a purchase when they need assistance or something has gone wrong. Wheras when something just works its no so often people post to say I just bought such an item and it works fine.

We've sold silly numbers on this memory now, easily over 5000 kits and so it must be pretty damn good RAM as our RMA's are no higher than any other memory such as Corsair. :)

You can find the thread here:

For the price of that Corsair dominator you can also consider the Crucial Anniversery, although only rated PC5400 it ocs like mad, in fact there is another thread in the memory section about this kit:

I have never overclocked anything before!! But I am willing to try, is this the Crucial memory you mentioned?

Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Tenth Anniversary Dual Channel Kit (TY2KIT12864AA663)

Also I have a 17" TFT at the mo, would it be wise to upgrade to a 22"? If so what is this one like?

Asus MW221U 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Silver/Black

I wouldn't bother with a 22".
Jump straight to a 24" - your rig will handle it without a proble, and it is well worth it.

Yeah that's what I was talking about.

Yeah a new screen is needed otherwise all the power of 8800GTX is wasted.

If you're gonna be doing music on it, I reccomend a sound card designed for music rather than gaming. Something with ASIO drivers would be preferable. Have a look at models by M-Audio, Tascam, Marian, Echo, RME & Terratec. PCI isn't the only option either. There are some pretty decent usb and firewire solutions out there, some with control surface features. You can pick up a 2nd hand Tascam US-428 pretty cheap nowadays. Something like that would prove pretty useful should you ever want to experiment with recording audio.
Also, throw as much ram at it as you can afford.

Yea I think your right. I have an M-audio Oxygen 8 midi keyboard so I may stick with M-audio.

I checked out the Tascam US-428 it was a grand!! Cant go that silly yet!!

How much RAM then 4Gb?

Thanks for your comments

A grand for a US-428 is WAAAY OTT, I bought mine new for <£300. You should be able to pick one up 2nd hand for about 200 bucks or less. Certain Disco/Studio equipment retailers out there are taking the mick if they think they can sell em for that price! I saw a couple on a popular auction site just now which looked promising.

As for the ram, it's not really worth getting more than 3GB, cos 32 bit windows can only use that much (with tweaking). You could utilise more with 64 bit windows, but I've heard bad things about compatability as far as music production rigs go.
