I'm looking for a pc spec for a gaming rig for a budget of £1000. I'm looking for just a system tower, as I have a monitor, keyboard, a x-fi soundcard, headset and gaming mouse + mouse pad. I plan on getting a conroe cpu and 2 gig ram. I intend on buying a mid ranged gfx card now (7600GT) and waiting till there is a real need for a 8800GTX or equivelent DX10 card to upgrade, allthough if people suggest it might be worth going for the 8800 now, I'd take that under advisement. SLI on the mobo would be nice, but is not essential. As it will be the first pc I will be building, I don't intend in overclocking it too much. The games it would be used for at the moment would be CoD2 and I'd be looking at getting the maximum fps out of the machine (333 constant on dx7). Also delivery would be to the Republic of Ireland if you could factor that into the shipping costs.

Thanks <3

My text is yellow, the rest is a tidy up of original post.
You could make the post a little easier to read.... might help get more responses.

So with that said, that leaves the following parts to go in the budget, but tell me if anything listed isnt needed, or if i missed anything.

  • Memory - See above requirement
  • CPU - See above requirement
  • CPU Cooler
  • Graphics Card - See above
  • Hard Drive
  • Optical Drive
  • Floppy Drive

Ok gimme 10 mins or so and i'll post a spec for you.........

I'll assume you'd prefer a nice quiet but still cool system over a monsterous beast that sounds like its shooting up the run away.

Hehe, well something that didn't sound like a jumbo jet engine would be nice, but the system i have now is quite noisy anyway,so noise isn't the #1 concern.

The PC will be in my bedroom.

Went a little over budget but i did add a better card.

Reason being, if you grab a 7600, ideally the DDR3 versions are the ones to go for, but that said, they retail at literally a few quid less then the 7900GS i spec'ed.

You could lose the compound and custom cpu cooler if you want to save a bit.

Damn, how did i manage that, wrong board.......

That spec, but with a DS4 / DQ6.......... dunno how the hell i managed to pick a totally different board.

That said though, the Abit does look feature rich, though i don't think that was the board i meant to click..... :?

Change the mobo with a Gigabyte DS4 and it'll shave £20 off the price.....

Forgot to factor in Rep of Ireland into the cost, but i've suggested a few ways to bring the price down already, so hope that helps... ;)

To clarify a few things above though.....

Ram - Choose slightly faster ram as the slower stuff works out the same price.
PSU - Bigger then you need but you did mention adding a 8800 later on.
Case & fans - I have this setup, though i use voltage convertor cables to reduce the speed, compared to my Antec with 8 odd 80mm fans and Jet cooler this is pure bliss.
HDD - Always choose WD, they always seem quieter then others and they perform perfectly fine to.

Replying to myself, just noticed one other thing i didnt factor in, which will cost about £20, DVDRW.

I'd recommend Liteon, we have 2 here, plus my 1 NEC, and the NEC is too loud when compared to the Liteons which do just as good a job, other brands i can't comment on.

EDIT: Updated spec, lower card, but everything fits in spec with a little left over for Republic of Ireland shipping.. ;)

Wow, thanks for the effort you put into the spec.

Just two questions on the Cpu.

(a) Is an aftermarket cooler definitely need on the conroe. How load are the cpus on stock cooling?

(b) Is the 2mb extra cache on the E6600 worth paying the money over the E6300?

Stock would be fine, but better cooling will prolong the life of the CPU,

As to the Cache, yeah the 6300 is just as good when clocked to the same speed.

You did say that you wasnt interested in overclocking, hence i spec'ed a faster CPU into the budget.

If you prefer to spend less, by all means the 6300 will still be a great cpu even with stock cooling.

Change the board to if you choose 6300 for a DS3.

At least if you decide to overclock you'll have suitable parts for the job.... :D
