I'm thinking of getting a new PC in the coming months, and not having kept on track with hardware for ages I'm unsure about everything that's available (whats good or not). I'm wondering if someone would be able to spec me a rough idea together.

Thanks very much. :)

  • Nice looking quality, spacious case. Preferably black and preferably easy to keep tidy. Side window optional but preferable.
  • As cool and quiet as possible (maybe W/C)
  • Plenty of HDD space
  • Preferably quad cored
  • 4GB+ ram.
  • Preferably a top/high end Nvidia graphics card, SLi if money allows.
  • Power supply that can easily cope with everything.
  • At least a DVD R/W + maybe a bluray R/W depending on the cost.
  • Keyboard + mouse. Must be comfortable for regular use as well as gaming.
  • Good set of comfy surround headphones + sound card if needed, mainly for gaming.
  • Pair of matching monitors if money allows. Can be different sizes if needed. (ability to connect PS3 and Xbox a big +)
  • Operating system Vista/XP. (which ever's best for the machine)
  • Mainly for gaming as well as uni work (mainly software dev + some 3d work/photoshop).

Hopefully something around £1500

Sorry about the size of the picture but i did that spec in about 10 mins, theres a lot that could be changed and ive tried to add all that you wanted without going over, (except sli as its not worth it and the ATI cards are better value for money.

Thanks. :)

A few Qs.

Why are the ATI Cards better value for money at the moment? and are they likely to still be better in a few months?

How does the Asus Xonar card compare to the creative cards or even the Razer Barracuda card that OcUK sell?

You say a lot could be changed, what stuff would drop from my spec to improve other areas?

Thanks again. :)

a little over, the 24" for your PC, and 22" for the ps3 (which can be hooked up via HDMI to DVI cable, and 360 via VGA)

the 4870 for the price comes within 85-90% (soem times beating) the GTX280, and its price is a hell of a lot better.

the PSU i have chosen IS over kill, as is the mobo, but if you decide to add another 4870 or a 4850 or 4870x2 later on you dont have to worry about the mobo or PSU restricting you.

The 4870 is about 90-95% of the performance of a GTX280 and for the extra £70 its not really worth it.

The xonar series have much better driver support and are regarded by most people as being better than the creative cards in the price range.

you could change some components to cheaper ones such as the blu-ray and the harddrives to save cash.

This is what I cooked up, over budget, but with a couple of 24 inchers. Note that you will save even more money by going with a P5Q Pro if you don't want Crossfire (pointless IMO, so you may as well), and opting for a Corsair TX750 instead (I only put in the Silencer as the TX750 is out ATM). Get an Xigmatek HDT-S1283 with the rentention bracket instead of the Tuniq Tower, which is only in this picture as a comparably priced placeholder.
