So I did want to go to NYC on boxing day but the other half is moaning about revision and exams so we've settled on the idea of 3 nights away, somewhere like Prague.

So, few Qs.

What's it like?
What to do there?
Where to stay?
Car needed?
Good sites to book through?

Prague is beautiful. the public transport is excellent, no car needed.

make sure you take in the view from the castle at night.

Depends what you want. City is nice and food good. When i went i was told that beer was 50p a pint and usal crap. I drink whiskey it was bloody expensive. Theres a free brothel called big sister if that floats your boat. The karting course is also top knotch.

I agree, no car needed, in fact ( though I should not advise it ) you can get away with not buying a ticket for the trams & metro !

Where to stay, wel lthat depands on how much you want to pay for a hotel !

I booked every thing my self from flight to hotel.
I used EasyJet fro both in fact, very good.

As for what to do, there is all the tourist sights to see during the day and in the evening there are plenty of places to eat. Go to the Lesser Town, it is quiter and cheaper to eat out.
Also there are lots of bars and, night clubs and adult clubs to visit.
So it depends what you want from the trip really !

haha I hear you, in most places it's 70-100Kc+ for whisky, I can't drink beer and cider is rarer than rocking horse poop.

What's it like?
A great city to relax and wander around at your own leisure, it's surprisingly compact and even if you don't want to walk get a transport ticket for the trams and metro.

What to do?
The BIG tourist places...

Prague Castle/Prazsky Hrad - Get there from the little walkway from here close to the Malostranska Metro/tram stops. See the changing of the guard and go in St Vittus Cathedral. Also take in the views (more on viewpoints later).

Charles Bridge/Karluv Most - not much to see here apart from an old bridge to be honest but some of the artists and photographers selling pictures of Prague are pretty good and may interest you. Also have a wander around Malo strana and al lthe little back streets, parks and canal bits.

Old Town Square/Staromestke Namesti - Here you can find the famous astronomical clock and various cafe that will rip you off with tourist prices. Head north from the north west corner along Parizska (Paris Street) for all the expensive shops. If you're going in December time there's usually a pretty good xmas market there.

Wenceslas Square/Vaclavske Namesti - More of a wide boulevard than a square but here you'll find lots of shops, strip clubs, English/Irish bars and the National Museum and State Opera at the top (south end). Not really a place I tend to go that often but it's interesting now and again.

Viewpoints
Letenske Park - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.093949,14.416337&spn=0.004887,0.009645&t=h&z=17 if you head up Parizska from Old town Square and cross the bridge it's right in front of you, wander up the steps towards the giant metronome. Good place to go for night views.

Petrin Tower - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.083406,14.395223&spn=0.002444,0.004823&t=h&z=18 take the funicular railway up from the Ujezd tram stop to this place it's a smaller version of the Eiffel tower and gives you great views across the city.

Zizkov TV tower - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.081035,14.451088&spn=0.004888,0.009645&t=h&z=17 It's quite retro modern but has interesting views across the city, if a little boring as it's out of the way of the older more picturesque part of town, you can get to it from the Jiriho z Podebrad metro station.

Other places of interest
Prague Zoo - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.11751,14.406788&spn=0.009769,0.01929&t=h&z=16
Gunpowder tower - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.087139,14.427889&spn=0.001222,0.002411&t=h&z=19
Vysehrad - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.06404,14.420929&spn=0.00978,0.01929&t=h&z=16 the former castle of Prague with its gardens and churches.
Staropramen brewery - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.068007,14.408988&spn=0.004889,0.009645&t=h&z=17 they do tours.
Slovansky Ostrov - http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.078639,14.41344&spn=0.004888,0.009645&t=h&z=17 cute little island park thing that's worth a wander around.

Other than all that just wander around the old town, stop off into bars or cafes to have a snack and continue exploring. I've been here almost 4 years and still haven't seen everything. Maybe catch an classical performance, ballet or opera, I know it may not interest you but after I've been they're pretty interesting if only for the talent of the performers. There's tons more that I haven't included but if you take a look at a guide you should be able to find some of it.

Where to stay?
Got me on that one, I live here so don't really know what all the hotels are like, people who have visited have probably got a better idea. But I will say avoid anywhere too far out or in close proximity to Wenceslas square.

Car needed?
Nope, in fact I'd avoid a car at all costs, it's a small old city and parking traffic is a major pain in the ass along with awful Czech drivers. Get a transport pass from newsagents and metro ticket offices, a 3 day pass is 330Kc for adults (about £10).

Guide prices
Beer 25-40Kc
Spirits - 50-100Kc
Cocktails - 90-200Kc
Taxi to/from airport and city centre 500-700Kc
Meal for two with a few drinks 500-600Kc (obviously depends where you go but this is typical)

let me know if there's anything specific you want to know :)

A few of the lads went on a school business trip, we ended up going back with the lads another few times :D

It is a brilliant city if you're into sight seeing, make sure you've got a camera handy!

Charles bridge is a good wander, some amazing bands playing, and some great artists too, anybody seen the guy who wears horns on his head, draws pretty crap and refuses to let you take pictures of him? On the opposite side to Old Town Square.

If you're up by the castle (which is well worth a visit), i thoroughly recommend the Cowboys steak restaurant. You'll spot it up there from the cow (not real ;)) on a spit roast on the balcony looked over by the castle. Not cheap compared to the rest of Prague (£20-£30 for main course and a couple of drinks i think we had) but my god, it was the best food i've ever tasted!

Don't know how true this is, but from what i've seen personally: Stay away from the taxi's in Wenceslas square. Saying that, we never got a taxi anywhere apart from and to the airport, everything was within walking distance :)

Stay away from taxi's full stop. If you need one then call one but don't take one from the street.
They did try to clamp down on the extra charges they add for foreigners but they still do it quite badly. Charge double what they do for those that can speak Czech.

Cool, thanks guys.

I've got an Acor loyalty card so was looking at the Novotel in / near W Square. Given some of the info above, should this be avoided?? Is it just because it's busy / noisy?

Well if you are sightseeing then Wencelas Square is pretty much your best base point seeing as all of the metro lines pass through it so you can get to anywhere in Prague within 30 minutes or so.

Yeah, busy/noisy/rowdy tourists is what I was thinking you might want to avoid if you were going with your other half. However looking at the map the hotel is a little way from Wenceslas Sq and should be quiet enough. It seems to be close to I.P. Pavlova which is fine, not full of tourists and short walk or 1 min metro ride to Wenceslas Sq. I used to live close to there and it's a fine area.

I love Pavlova....

Anyhoo, Thanks Col M. useful info. Street Maps is a legend tool too as its picked up some local bars / restaurants and applies the ratings to them so you can get a feel of where to eat out and stuff.

Yeah and Google street view covers Prague too so you can check things out and get your bearings before you go ;)

We stayed here when we went, was a great hotel. Very business orientated but the rooms are very modern and well furnished, internet in every room and a fantastic buffet breakfast. Its only 30 seconds walk from Tesco as well which was good for cheap food/beer ;) Oh and bear in mind Prague will be ****** freezing on boxing day :p

It'll be flipping cold, so take a coat and warm clothes. I went in November and it was already near freezing most of the time.

Wear comfy shoes. It's very uneven cobbled streets everywhere and it beats hell out of your feet.

Take a camera and take lots of pics.

Eat lots of duck, pork knee (much better than it sounds), goulasch and steamed dumplings. Drink grog, lots of coffee (which they are really proud about), hot chocolate and beer.
