One failed bios update* and I find myself in need of a new mobo for my i5-6600K. I had an asus Z170-P D3 with DDR3.

Looks like DDR3 for socket 1151 don't really exist anymore so also looks like that needs an update to DDR4, 16gb should be enough and is what I had before.

Budget I'd like to keep down as just got a Rift which I've not even used due to this mishap.

*Upgraded to latest copy and machine will then not post. Can get a single post if I drop the cmos but asus on their latest bios disabled downgrading so it will not recognise older bios versions I try to load up.

Yeah I'd like to keep that, I had it overclocked to 4.2.

Edit: Not sure if it'll make a difference but should add running a 1080 in here but no need for SLI.

Shame, if gigabyte might of been able to send if off for repair. Not sure if Asus Wil offer the same direct ? Worth asking then .

Just get a z270 board :)

But above board is solid and was mainstream flagship for gigabyte when launched

I have yeah, that is the one post I can get after a CMOS clear but it refuses to use older bios versions saying they are not valid. It will try to reapply the same version but it's not fixed it sadly.

Should have a look at second hand market for your DDR3 , should get a nice some back :) specially with prices rising and ddr3 being expensive from new due to limited

That Gaming 7 has Q Flash as well. Mean you don't need CPU or ram to flash bios :)

@mickyflinn went well thanks. All arrived and installed on Friday. Had a small panic with my AIO cooler as was getting 90c temps, then remembered I have to set the pump's fan connection in bios to 100%. Nice and cool 25c on idle again.

I managed to get my clock speed up to 4.4 this time without any deep tweaking so will see if I can push that some more later. I also need to figure out the memory settings to get that up to the 3200 it's rated to as it's currently on 2100.

@orbitalwalsh yup this was my intention to sell on the ddr3, will probably throw that on MM later. I also like this has a dual bios so if I brick one I have a fail over. I was checking for bios updates, I notice the next one up has a warning that once upgraded to you can't rollback, I guess that is a warning asus was missing

Oh and just as important, the rift is working :) Did have to get a hmdi->DP adaptor as it doesn't like the hdmi port on my 1080 for some reason.

Can't enable XMP ? Should get settings straight up from there .

If you do someone brick both BIOS then you can also send to Gigabyte RMA :)

I believe the BIOs update stopped Non K chips from being overclocked via Bus tweaking. now vendors use BLACK chips to counter this but o. Higher end boards .

Odd that your HDMI port isn't working... What card is it ?
Active convertors from hdmi to DP are quite expensive

Ah XMP...wasn't sure what that was haha.

I figured it must have been something like that, not the smarts thing in the case of failed updates though. I should be fine to not break both of them on this board!

It's a EVGA 1080 SC FTW3. The HDMI port works, it can run my monitor just fine but apparently not the rift. It was what was confusing me for a while as I though maybe the rift was broken. Not an active converter, just a random HP adaptor I borrowed from work to test which I'll just need to replace.

Using a cheap hdmi cable ?

You probably could have got a new bios chip flashed to the latest version on Ebay for less than a tenner. Asus still use replaceable bios chips in their boards. You could still do it and have a working board to sell on.
