Spec me some 2.0 speakers

For nearly 10 years now I've had a Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 system (only ever really used as 2.1). But they're well past it now, the volume control is all over the place and they make a constant noise when switched on.

So I'm after some half decent 2.0 speakers, these so-called monitor speakers have caught my eye, the ones here on OCUK look nice. Also, although a little more pricey, the M-Audio AV40 Studiophile speakers seem quite popular. At £120-odd they worth the extra money? I'm not after anything that's perfect but I'd like something with half decent quality for listening to music and playing games. Is there anything better I can get for a maximum of £120?

Thanks :)

The Edifers are good value, and there was an enthusiastic write-up about them here not so long ago.

I've supplied a few pairs of these active pyramid speakers to people who've had or tried conventional £100+ powered monitors. They've all reported that the sound from the pyramids is way better. I've not heard the direct competition myself so can't comment specifically, but I have heard a Cambridge Audio Topaz AM5 driving C.A. S20 speakers on music that I know. The source was a Topaz CD5. The pyramids sounded far more enjoyable. Make of that what you will. Here's a link if you're interested.

You might also want to have a look at the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1 Speaker System which OC does for less than £125. I know it's 2.1, but they've got a good reputation for a reason.

Thanks for the info :) I found the review thread on here about the Edifiers since posting, they look very good for the money actually! :)

I've had a look at the pyramids but they look very ugly to me :p Also just had a look at the AE 2.1 speakers, but I'd rather stick to 2.0 as I already have a 5.1 system in my room for the TV.

Thanks again.
