Spec me some carpets

I need to put down some new carpets and underlay on the staircase, landing and living room. Had a walk around carpet store today and no idea what I was looking at for spec wise or price wise, just a lot of aimless touching :).

My personal taste isn't a factor because I'm selling the house so budget wise nothing cheapo but not looking to spend 30sqm either.

Any carpet types, specs I should be looking at? Same carpet throughout or should I get a softer feel underfoot for living room and more durable for the stairs?
Any recommendations on good places to purchase ?

I wouldn't bother for softer feel for living room, most people just want practicality. Just get a reasonably hard wearing carpet, same one for living room and stairs.

I would just go for middle of the road on budget. Looking at what carpetright offers is probably a good start, then check local independents.

I'm sure if you Google it you'll find some advice on what materials are best for carpets. I would not get a pure wool one because they are susceptible to moth damage.

I got victoria first impressions. Check your independents as they have the real name of the carpet and not the fake names that the big sheds use.
Some good companies online are https://www.morganandquinn.co.uk/ and https://www.flooringmegastore.co.uk/

Ive bought victoria and cormar online. The cormar was delaminated, but the company replaced it FOC and i kept the original.

A decent thick underlay also helps. If your selling up soon, then the cormar range can be had quite cheap online.

Tapi are a good shout - mind you their prices have risen a little - Tapi Gold was an excellent underlay but I’m not sure if they still do it

Stupid question but how much is the house worth? That would be a serious factor for me in choosing a carpet/underlay for sale if it is a £150K student hole I'd spend next to nothing on the carpets if it is an £800K designer pad then obviously I'd spend significantly more but still not too much, underlay will be important as that can give the luxury soft feeling to even a cheap carpet!

In the Midlands, from a local firm, we recently paid £760 for a decent quality carpet in two rooms (one large and one small), a small landing and the stairs. That included 8mm underlay and fitting. Well worth the money and has transformed how the house feels. Just don't do what I did and get trigger happy screwing down floorboards and hit a central heating pipe!

House is a tweener 550-600 family home. Current renovations have been mid spec and the lvt felt too expensive at 30-40sqm so I don't want to spend that again if I can help it.

Just a question of how low to go to keep it mid spec. I don't know enough about carpets to know what the sweet spot is where quality stops and "stain resistant luxury triple twill" marketing words start. Looking at maybe 60m2 plus underlay and grippers.

Are you selling straight away if so you could go really cheap it only needs to look ok for a few weeks and some reasonable underlay will make it feel good in the short term!

Problem with buying cheap or even mid range carpets in a £600k home is they’ll just be ripped out and replaced by the new buyer, not your problem maybe but what a huge waste of money/resources!

Buy decent ones and factor them into the sale price.

from a professional carpet cleaners view, i've seen all sorts of carpets. cheap is not just tacky feeling, but typically doesn't do well with keeping clean, nor being cleaned. it wears bad, end up with dark traffic lanes.

you also get this weird thing, where once carpet hits a certain expensive price, it becomes much harder to clean. wool carpets for instance, can't take strong products, frays when scrubbed, gets dents really easily, sometimes swells and smells like dog when wet. the same applies in bathrooms/kitchen work tops. you get expensive marble tiles in bathrooms, that get covered in limescale and then any product you use to remove the limescale damaged the marble surface. frustrating as ability to clean doesn't seeem to come into account when people make purchases.

i've gone with synthetic polypro carpet. doesn't feel quite as nice as wool perhaps on bare skin, but it's really not that big of a deal. i can easily clean the carpet, throw anything at it and it'll come up like new. you can get good quality synthetic carpet that is also budget friendly

have a look at the gallery further down on the below page. you can see some of the carpet was totally wrecked and comes up much better. (might need to click reload gallery)

I had some Cormar Primo Plus with Carpenter Richstep underlay fitted in my flat in 2017. I can recommend this combination.

We have refused to do have the new build house we are buying carpeted by the housebuilder as a result of the excessive cost, poor taste and poor quality carpet and underlay they would fit. I'm tempted by the above combination again or possibly using a denser, but still 9mm underlay.
