Spec me some cleaning kit

It took me about 6 hours to get it looking like that, and I could have spent longer but I got bored!

For that I used bog standard car wash using a wool mitt, followed by megs clay bar, 2 coats of klasse all in one (it a polish, paint cleaner and a few other things), one coat of poorboys sealant and 2 coats of the wax I mentioned.

Took a lot of hard work but when I finished it look bloody excellent! Just a shame I've just sold it :(

(BTW, I DID NOT use the sponge in the bottom pic on the paintwork, it was just for the wheels :p )

if, like me, you suck at the waxing.
Hairy Fox.

There are a lot of products on the market, I think there are a lot of unnecessary products too but I know people will disagree (elliot).

El always disagrees, that is just him. :p

I reckon £50 will get me a decent shampoo, wax, polish, clay bar and wash mit.

That and a bit of patience and I reckon you'll be able to turn any car into something to be proud of.

Fox, that's true about the silver. My dads' Rover 800 is a sort of bluey silver and that hides scratches very well... whereas my 220 and both the 214's had quite reflective paint and thus look/looked horrible when the sun shone on them.

If I could get it like that I'd so have a black car - I'm just paranoid of getting a car that just looks a mess when the sun shines on it and lights up all the swirl marks :(

I haven't really started on detailing the (black) CTR yet so after I wash it, it's filthy within a day or two but the MR2 used to only get washed once per month as it stayed immaculate all that time.
I remember waxing the bonnet on the MR2 with Meguiars NXT then driving 300 miles to Newcastle. When I got there the whole car was filthy but the bonnet was like I'd just washed it, not a spec of dirt on it!

If you can be bothered to get rid of the swirls with a PC first then give it a good polish and wax then a black car can look fantastic for weeks on end.

Don't forget some decent towels to get the polish/wax off. You don't want to do more damage taking it off!

Will also enable you to buff the paintwork well.

T cut and colour magic :p

I have some stuff that you just rub all over a wet car with a wet sponge, leave it to dry to a haze and then buff off, comes up well shiny and water beads off for ages afterwards.

I haven't washed my car in about 6 weeks though

Is the PC really capable of taking a car which has had 5 years of neglect (Well not neglect but regular washing) and is thus swirl-mark city and making it look as awesome as your MR2 did?

It's better than that!!

There's a thread on detailingworld about a red 16 yr old MR2 that had fairy liquid wash twice per year and after it had been done with the PC it was amazing!

Go over to detailingworld.co.uk and have a look at some of the cars over there.

Absolutely amazing what the PC does the paint work. I've seen them for sale around £80. Bargain for something that can restore your paintwork to such a level.

edit... Damn you eidolon :p

Hmmm I can still see many swirlmarks on that red one..

edit: ok that 200SX is utterly awesome, damn, thats a serious difference.

Don't forget to allow for the cost of a transformer, extension cable, backing plates, pads and all the polishes/waxes etc. that you need. In total it's realistically closer to £250 :(

I've just got my SSR2.5 today so I plan on testing it out on the CTR at the weekend, I'll get some pics if I end up doing it.

Ouch :( I would have thought you'd at least get the transformer and at least one polishing pad with it.

Looking forward to seeing the pics.

You get one pad made from sandpaper, I let my mate use it on his car and he's gonna need to respray the bonnet now as it's taken the laquer off it, oops!

I think the PC, transformer and extension cost me £150 all in. I've also bought 3-4 pads and a backing plate which cost me about £50 I think. Then it's up to you what products you use, I've went for the Poorboys stuff myself so I'll see how it goes.

I seriously recon you should go over the whole thing in Meguiars ScratchX.
It will be mighty labour intensive, but the difference is shocking, when i did mine (before i finished up) the difference between the areas that had been ScratchX'd and those that hadnt was as clear as night and day. It got rid of some nasty rubs/scratches and swirls and just generally made the paint look new. It will give you blisters and take you an age, but if you want it to look like new i recon you should:

Rinse>Wash>Rinse>Claybar>ScratchX(whole car)>Wash>Rinse>Dry>Wax.

Sorted.
