Hi guys,

I used to game a lot back in't day but haven't done so properly.

I used to really enjoy FPS like:

Counterstrike Source
Day of Defeat
Call Of Duty 4
Half Life 2
Doom 3

Also RPGs, Strategy games, Puzzle/Adventure games such as

Prince of Persia Trilogy
Prototype (the most recent game I played in sense of how old it is)
Zelda games (I know they aren't on the pc but hey)
Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Red Alert/C&C
Big fan of the Splinter Cell games.

Also got right into EVE: Online and City Of Heroes too...

So I guess that gives you an idea of what I like, I don't like games like Oblivion, tried it, thought it was crap.

Recently with a new job I work with a lot of avid gamers so I want to get my teeth stuck right in and get some hours in! What would you recommend?

My rig can pretty much run anything so no need to worry about that :)

Cheers all,
Jake

Not very recent but you may enjoy Hitman: Blood Money (puzzle solving action/adventure assassination game) and Thief: Deadly Shadows (first person medieval stealth em up - should like it if you liked splinter cell).

I would do the obligatory Deus Ex shout (if you havnt already played it) but it does look very very dated now and isnt that accessible for newcomers - but if you can get into it then it is an amazing game.

Will also throw in Batman: Arkham Asylum because its awesome. 3rd person action adventure with great scripting and level design. Great acting and atmosphere with some good puzzles to solve.

For an RPG I would suggest the witcher (fully patched) - its a very mature RPG in a medieval/fantasy setting. Takes a bit of time to get into and its not for everyone (what game is though...) but its very highly rated by the majority for a reason.

Sequals are also due for Deus Ex, Batman and The Witcher so it would be a nice setup to prepare for the impending releases and would be a good indication of if you will like the new ones.

Thanks Podmonkey :)

Hitman games I've always wanted to give these a go, they are worth it then? - I remember playing the demo for Thief, don't think I liked it...will give it another visit though.

Whats Deux Ex all about?

Batman sounds very good :) - Witcher, you're the first to say good things about it :), shall take a look...cheers dude.

Starcraft 2 - strategy, multiplayer, will make you late for work.
Plants vs Zombies - strategy, will make you late for work.

All those suggestions are purely from my point of view. The Witcher recieved some great reviews when it came out and has recieved a major patch that fixed most of the negatives. People will always complain about some games (even HL and some of the most lauded games in history have detractors) but most peoples opinion from what ive seen love it, because it is a fantastic game. Its quite cheap now too so cant hurt to try.

Hitman: Blood Money (the 4th one) is fantastic and for me the best in the series as its just brought all the positives from the others and got rid of most of the negatives. The graphics are still pretty good and the scale and openess are fantastic to work within.

Whats Deus Ex about? I dont have 3 weeks to explain im afraid :D it is quite a twisting story driven game. Basically though its about a government agent who discovers a conspiracy and then **** hits the fan. If you did get this then I would suggest looking up some of the graphics mods that are around to make it a little bit more bearable for a first time through (it is based on the unreal 1 engine - I think - after all).

Batman is very good. Each of these games should be available quite cheap now too which helps if you arent sure.

Have a look on Youtube for some montage/gamplay/trailers and see if anything takes your fancy.

Oh and throwing in Portal aswell - You have played HL2 so theres a chance you might already have played it but if not then its a great little first person puzzler with nice game design and mechanics. Good characters and humour in the latter stages of the game too. You have also missed the fad of quoting everything from the game to try and be funny so that wont ruin it for you either.

Cheers pal :)

Assasins Creed 1 I had on the SexBox before I sold it..shall have to get numero 2 :) Cheers!

I also give a shout for Starcraft 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Darksiders could be a good game if you enjoy Zelda, I've heard a few people comparing it to the Zelda games.

I really enjoyed Splinter Cell Conviction a lot, haven't played any of the older ones so I don't know how it compares.

Personally I'd say just load up Steam, have a look around and see what appeals to you.

Indeed I have...I find myself playing older games again :p - 3/4 of the way through Hl2 for the umpteenth time!

Although I'm REALLY looking forward to Portal 2 coming out :D

Also it might be a good idea to find out what your new colleagues are playing. Could be good to join them online for some team building pixel murder.

Yeah, Portal 2 is gonna be sweeeeet. May need to replay Portal soon actually, get my brain working ready for some co-op portalling action :D

Indeed, gonna be amazing :)

Aye, a lot of them are into racing sims I think. Which I like but thats more suited to consoles imo :)

Fallout new vegas (a lot of people hated oblivion but loved the fallout games)
L4D2
Company of Heroes is the best RTS game in the last 10 years.
Bad Company 2

You'll probably get quite a kick out of Borderlands, although I think that's about the same age as Prototype that you mentioned. Still a friggin' good game though. And it does have good extension packs.

I've seen company of heroes mentioned so many times. Deffo going to give this a look! :)
Fallout New Vegas...never been keen on the fallout but I posted in here being open to suggestions :)

Cheers all!
