ive got an 80gb hd, but i need a bigger drive for storing lots of media?

what should i get

2 x 250gb in raid0

1 x 500gb

1 x 320gb

???

are they all equally reliable?

there all reliable if you have a decent RAID controller.

RAID makes your data less safe, and with there being two drives there's a higher chance of one failing.

is raid1 worth it? or do you think i'll be alright with a single 400-500gb drive?

you normally get some warming that a drive fails right?

In my opinion RAID1 is not beneficial in a domestic environment, all it provides is the ability to continue operating in the event of a disk failure - it's NOT a substitute for a backup.

SMART monitoring can give a warning of an impending disk problem but it can't spot everything and can also give false positives. It's better than nothing but not to be relied upon.
