I'm 25 and this year diagnosed myself with hayfever, a couple of weeks ago I duly popped into my local chemist and bought a packet of non drowsy antihistamines by the label 'Loratadine' 10 mg.

Yesterday I had a moment of muppetry when we decided to go and feed the ducks round near the local pond - and on the way walk through a corn field.

About half way through the field I got the usual watery eyes, nose really itching again and started sneezing.

I think I need something a bit more powerful than these tablets. They seem to have been working fine up until yesterday when I walked through that field but I popped one about 2 hours ago and am sat here with the usual symptoms. I think that maybe yesterday has weakened the link between my body and the pills or something as my body's rejecting their qualities or something. Anyone recommend any strong, non drowsy tablets? Got Silverstone this weekend and I don't wanna be sat there feeling like this :/

This morning I had a Piriton Extra stonng, benadryl and benadryl plus and my eyes are still itchy.

I havn't done it but some people recommend having some kind of jab at the local GP.

is the jab a permanent solution or so?

Medical thread .. but before it's locked, the jab is the best bet.

I had thought of that but it's only hayfever tablets we're talking here - which you can buy off the shelf without prescription, so don't see the harm in it?

Each brand usually goes down to two types (one normal, one none drowsy). I usually find the normal one does the trick (but I swap every few years as the affect seems to weaken). It does take a while (for me at least) for it to get into my system. Usually a week, and if I miss a tablet all hell breaks loose!

Why not see a GP? They can advise you better about the side-effects of anti-histamines, the alternatives such as the jabs, and can prescribe the over-the-counter medicine for you so that it's cheaper for you. Last time I bought OTC hayfever pills it cost me £7 for two weeks worth of pills. I now get 2 months worth (60 tablets) for £7.40 or whatever the current prescription price is.

tesco's own brand works for me! £1.70 for 14 tablets :)

don't get fobbed off by brands. they all use the same thing mostly. cetrizine hydrochloride.

Dont get fooled by the brand names. Most either contain Loratadine which is the non drowsy one, or cetirizine the one that makes you drowsy. I usualy just by the Tesco Branded non drowsy ones. But there is one branded one that ive used that has something called Acrivastine in it, no idea what it does but i used them last year (they arent cheap) but it worked very well when my symptoms got worse "Benadryl Allergy Relief" white and blue box with a stop watch thing on the front.

But like people say if the pills aint working Jab is the only way tbh.
