Spec me some new cans.

As much as I agree with the subwoofer comment, it's not always practical at night time or if one has disgruntled neighbours! In this case, the only compromise is a bass-heavy headphone that can at least give you a head massage!:D

I've got a pretty decent sub off an old logitech z2300 system. I replaced the shocking speakers, but kept the sub. Gives a very warm bass. That can really pound the house at high volumes.

I live in Greater Manchester, any ideas where I could test the CAL! and Goldringer.

I think we are definitely down to the two. The sony's are HUGE! I'd be looking where I'd parked my helicopter with those things.

There seem to be 4 places in Manchester, I'm sure if you give them a ring you can see if you can demo the DR-150's. I'd bring a CD or MP3 player so you can listen to something that you know.
:)

haha. Bang and Olufsen did get done in Manchester. Not many more expensive places to loot than that. Will be interesting how you explain obtaining a sound system worth more than your house....

I'd also like to warn against Grado headphones when looking for maximum bass.

I have a set of Grado SR225i's as my current headphones of choice when listening to music, and although they offer sensational sound quality, they don't offer the deepest bass available. The bass isn't bad, but it's not as deep or powerful as other headphones out there. I listen mostly to rock, metal and alternative music, which as Shamrock metioned earlier, are the Grado's most suited styles.

I personally find my Sennheiser HD595's (which I no longer use much as I prefer the Grado's) to offer a bit of a deeper bass. Most Sennheiser's though tend to be quite decent all rounders.

Just received my Creative Aurvana Live!

What can I say, a FANTASTIC purchase.

I can't believe how natural sounding the vocals are for £50. Comfort is truly amazing even with glasses. The sub bass range is excellent without overpowering the vocals.

I doubt I could have done much better for £50.

Thanks everyone for their comments.

Yes, you could do a lot worse for £50. They're definitely not monitoring headphones as they are not entirely accurate, but accurate enough to sound natural and musical.

Although they can be run fairly easily from a portable player or laptop headphone output, I use mine with a Fiio E7 portable amp and it definitely makes an improvement; tighter bass and cleaner sound mids and treble.

Goldring DR150 are excellent value at £40 and should be an easy choice but CAL aren't bad cans either.
