Hi there, just ordered a new bike (cotic road rat, insurance claim.. made a thread about it a few weeks ago) I have about £100 left for some new pedals so I ask you what pedals to get!

After flat pedals, clipless don't really appeal as every time I want to go out just for a quick ride or to the shops etc will have to mess around with some shoes, unless you can persuade me differently I have £100 to spend on some new flat pedals :)

How about something like the Shimano M424

Looks a bit too cheap, I have £100 from insurance company, I know it sounds a bit extravagant but I wont get any change so mights as well get something as close as possible to the budget. I'm not really after spds either :(

I wouldn't even entertain flat pedals on a road bike unless it's just something to do one or two miles a day on, in which case I wouldn't spend 100 on pedals.

Buy some expensive pedals with the insurance money and sell them if you must.
Best flat pedals I've ever used (and still use on my MTB) are Nano flats. Superstar sell them reasonably cheap but I got HT components ones (exactly the same just different branding and cheaper again). You could go for the magnesium ones with the Ti axle upgrade if you want to spend all the money on the flats.
Personally for a road bike I always go for clipless pedals but each to their own.

Oh and go for the grub screw pedals (top 4) not the through pin.
The different shapes hold no benefit over each other really.

Cool thanks for the tips guys, yeah I know clipless would really make sense but I have never used them before and don't really know how well I would get on with them?
Think I will investigate a bit more into clipless, do you reckon I could get shoes and pedals for £100?

Yes, no problem. Shimano M520s for £20 leaves you £80 for shoes. They're MTB pedals technically though..

I'd try and find a cheap shimano RT81 + the M520s. It's a touring shoe using spd cleats and looks fine being used on the road.

Any shoe that takes an SPD cleat you should be able to walk around in, SPD-SL is the road style that make you walk funny.

Cool thanks guy's have had a quick look into the clipless pedals and they are looking good, does anyone know of any shoes though that look a bit more casual but still have the SPD cleat? Just will save me having to lug around another pair of shoes in my bag or whatever

I'm after some pedals for my Boardman Carbon too. Preferably lightweight, preferably black to match the frame, other than that I'm clueless. What's the difference between SPD/SPD-SL/cleats etc?

I commute 2 miles a day on a very stop-starty route so need something easy to get in and out of (double-sided?), but also regularly do 30 miles+ in the summer without taking my feet off once, so need something comfortable for longer rides too.

Need pedals and shoes just like the OP, and would prefer shoes I can walk in ok-ish. Being able to jump on it with normal trainers as well would be a massive bonus. Any suggestions?

Generally:
SPD = MTB = double-sided pedals and easier to walk in shoe
SPD-SL = Road = single-sided, rigid soled shoe, hard to walk in

Most manufacturers have their own versions of each, the cleats generally aren't interchangable between brands.

Pretty much exactly what I am after too!

Anyone had any experience with the Crank Bro's pedals, majority of their pedals are duel or sometimes 4 way entries?
