About a week ago I realised that I didn't have a deck of playing cards. This was traumatic for me, because everyone should have at least one deck.

I was considering which to buy, and what immediately sprang to mind was Waddingtons number1. These were the cards that we always used to use at my grandmothers, and I always liked them.

I ordered two packs, and they arrived yesterday... I'm very disappointed with them. I've been playing with them for a while to break them in, riffle shuffling, cascading etc. and it is still difficult to draw off a single card from the top. i.e. to deal the cards!

So I think that these could well be fake. But in the mean time I fancy trying a different brand.

Other than bicycle, what brands do people recommend?

I just researched this a few weeks ago. Definitely look at good quality plastic cards as they can be cleaned and will last a life time if used as intended.

KEM are considered the best. They are smooth and so will glide very nicely over each other. They were too expensive for me at around £20 for 2 decks.

Widely considered as one of the top 3 best are Copags. They have a more paper 'feel like' texture so don't glide as smoothly over each other so doing a nice consistent 'fan' out is a bit harder to accomplish. As this doesn't bother me I went for these at £10 for 2 decks and I am very happy, they riffle beautifully. (btw each deck comes with 2 jokers and a warranty card which can be used as a third joker if needed)

I have a twin deck of Copags been using them regularly for close to 5 years now and they are still in good nick. Only one card in each deck that is noticably marked. Well worth the £15 I spent on them way back when.

My friend's grandfather gave me a set of playing cards called Kings & Queens of Scotland, with all the monarchs since 900~ onwards to modern day. I think you can get other nationalities. I don't play with them, but they are pretty cool. Quite old now I'd imagine, 20 years or so.

The gold plated ones from 5Ubs Australia thread. Everything else is pointless
