Mostly Autumn
Karnataka
and to a lesser extent Breathing Space

All of which I've recently got into. Mostly Autumn in particular were until recently unheard of by myself and real gem of a find. Kind of echoes Pink Floyd but their own distinctive style.

Karnataka are more Genesis/Marillion soundalike (well Genesis before it became the Phil Collin's Blues Band and Marillion before they started doing elevator muzak) but from what I've read seem to have issues keeping the same line up between albums. I bought the album by Panic Room who spun off from the first Karnataka but that was a bit too poppy for my liking..

Basically looking for anything that has shimmering soaring keyboards overlaid with melodic guitar solos.

Have you given Dream Theater a listen?

Suppose you'd best check out Rush too, they're lauded as the best from many areas, though I don't know of the bands you have listed.

Got some Dream Theater in the collection but they tend to be more Metal orientated (likewise Nightwish, Edenbridge et al).

Trans-siberian orchestra? Possibly a bit mainstream for you, but quite a lot of their songs fit the shimmering keyboards interspersed with melodic guitar solos mould.

A bit of ferreting round has produced the following bands that might be worth me checking out...

Magenta
Touchstone
The Reasoning

Will have a look on the 'Tube later and see if there's any samples kicking around.

Amplifier looks good - I see rainforest have the 2 CD set listed at under £10 (released in February) so I'll give that a shot.

In the meantime I was quite impressed with The Reasoning from the clips I looked at on You Tube, also they appear to be backed by Marillion's producer and Steve Rothery.

It's actually out on Monday. You can hear the whole record and/or buy it here: http://amplifier.bandcamp.com/

No-one seems to have picked up on the point that the OP likes female-fronted bands.

Kanataka
Mostly Autumn
The Reasoning
Nightwish
Edenbridge

All have female singers.

OP, if you're looking for an interesting female-fronted proggy band I would recommend Brave from the USA. Specifically Searching For The Sun and the EPs Waist Deep in Dark Waters and Passages.

I would also recommend you check out Lucid Fly, one of my favourites also from the USA.

I saw The Marianna Hollow live a few weeks ago and I was quite impressed. It's slightly less proggy but still good. Their debut came out recently.

If you need any more recommendations for female-fronted rock/metal let me know, I've spent years writing about the stuff.

Not like any of my suggestions?

I always post in these spec me prog threads and no one ever seems to like my ideas :(

TPT, Mew and Frost* are just too.... twee for me. And others I know who are into prog rock. Same with dredg, just can't get into them.

RUSH may be up your alley, male front but Lee's voice is rather high.

2112 particularly if your looking for keyboards. Try to listen to their 5 part epics rather than their singles.

Such as Caress of Steel and Hemispheres.
