Above my bed is a projector (BenQ MP512ST) and at the end of my bed where the adjacent wall is, is a 72" Projector screen. Behind this wall is my computer with a Asus Xonar D2X sound card with some Logitech 5.1 Analogue speakers plugged into it (Green,Orange,Black).

What i would like to do ideally is to connect my computer to the projector. I'm guessing that the best method would be a DVI to HDMI cable from my 8800GT graphics card.

Now i would like some speakers (Saw some nice bose ones in an office once) They need to be white to match the rest of the room design (Room is black with white furniture) so i need someone to spec me some. I'm thinking 1 in each corner and a sub under the bed, but where would i put the middle one if i went for 5.1? Being that there is a projector screen coming down from the ceiling.

Also, how would i get the sound from my PC. The video i would use the method above (DVI to HDMI) but what about the sound? Would i need an AMP? Would i need digital speakers? Analogue speakers?

I don't want to spend a lot of money but want good quality sound.

I have a Marantz SR4200 AV Reciever downstairs with 5.1 Mission speakers which sounds good but i know a system like that in my bedroom is overkill.

Help me guys and girls :)

Hi,

Few points hopefully to answer some of your questions;

1) you will want to have a digital co-ax cable putting the sound out from your D2X. Even if your GFX card supports audio via the HDMI/DVI (if probably doesn't) your wasting the money you spent on the soundcard if you don't.

2) Yes the graphics card will be fine connected via HDMI/DVI adaptor with the sound being outputted by the D2X

3) If you buy an all in one speaker PC package like the Logitech Z-5500's then you don't need a separate receiver. If you end up wanting something different (Hi-fi home cinema speakers) then you will need an amplifier. These start at around £150 and beyond. You then need to add speakers to that; a decent entry level kit will cost £150.
Amp+Speakers=£300. Look at RicherSounds or another hifi specialist for this.

Obviously taking the Z-55's will be significantly cheaper than going for home cinema kit, so you may wish to consider that.

4) Your seriously limiting your speaker choice by only wanting white speakers. Off the top of my head the only speakers that come to mind at a reasonable price are Tangent Evo's, and AFAIK they are not great. BOSE stuff comes in white yes, but will cost you a fair wedge and are not great value for what you get.

I would consider relaxing the white thing and make black speakers an option. There will be far, far, far more to chose from if you do.

5) Mount your centre speaker on a wall bracket below the projector if you can. This is where the dialogue comes from in a surround setup and is essential that it is placed below your screen in this way to get the best sound. The sub can go anywhere in a room within reason since the sound is non- directional.

If you don't want to go overkill then for the Money the Logitech z55's are very good for the price and you will get a good sound from them.

Hope this helps :)

What about if we wanted a 2.1 system?
