Hi all, well, i have recently seen Aperture from Apple.com and i really like the program but the £270 price mark put me off a bit, soooo.... could someone please spec me a decent photo viewer which is free. I just feel that iPhoto is a bit basic for me and would really like something which can organise things a bit better and possibly process raw images.

Thanks, oh and btw i have a powerbook with an intel duo processor

I believe talking about copyright theft or warez is against the rules.

Who? Also, if you feel I am (and i in no way condone breaking the law) then quoting me was a pretty silly thing to do...

EDIT:

Also, photoshop elements album or whatever they call it is cheaper and not too bad, misses a lot of apertures funkier capabilities though

If you are a student I am sure it's about £70

It will run on my 17" Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz 1Gig Ram

If you just upload a few RAWs into it then it works a charm.. Uploading a unsorted 70Gig folder and you'll scream at it.

I dont know what the Intel laptops are like but I really wouldnt use this program on something without loads of processing power.

What I do like about Aperture is the fact all the raw controls work on jpeg files.

Coupled with dual monitors it is a really good program, and does allow sorting to be very easy :) There are a silly amount of options in it really, and it takes a while to get it working in the way you want! :D

iPhoto '06. It's like a cut down version of Aperture, and free with new Macs or £29 with the other iLife applications. It also supports all the same RAW formats as Aperture, and you can configure it to open files in other programs, e.g. Photoshop. It's great for keeping a tidy library of all your images.

I run Aperture on a 17" MacBook Pro (2.16GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM) and it runs very well.

Aperture relies on a good GPU more than a good CPU. MacBook Pros and recent Powerbooks will be good, but iBooks and MacBooks will struggle.

However, Aperture also runs very well on my PowerMac G5 (Dual 2GHz) which only has an ATI9600.

Tip: I've found that when editing photos, the bit which slows Aperture down the most is working with a cropped or straightened photo... so leave the cropping/straightening until the end.

Really, I'm seriously considering going to the apple store tomorrow and buying a macbook pro for aperture. do you find the screen res high enough to work with it comfortably? (could I get away with a more portable 15"?) and do you have the 7200 hard drive??

I have the standard (for 17" anyway) 5400RPM 120GB HDD. The screen resolution on the 17" is great for Aperture, the same as my 20" Cinema Display (1680x1050). I think it will be fine on a 15".

All the pallets are resizable, and full-screen mode is great because you can get most of the pallets as floating translucent windows. The 'HUD' is very configurable and you can show what you want in it for each image.

As for speed, just remember to crop and/or straighten after you've done all the other image adjustments.

Cropping and straightening does slow the MB down a LOT :(
I use it with dual monitors which makes things far easier. You can set it up so you can have the library of images on one screen, and a fullscreen image on the other screen for editing.

dual monitors would be nice but unfortunately it needs to travel with me, so thats not an option. If you look at how aperture works it's easyto understand why cropping etc is such a big load. I may decide to process and rotate my image with nikon capture beforehand, that way i can also keep down the size of my image library...

A final question....glossy screen or no??

I vote No!

Glossy screens might look nice, but the contrast is wrong and colours are too saturated for graphics work.
