Spec me - Starter DSLR

I never had any issues with my D90 or D70 before that, I only have average hands so I could see if you had giant hands the lower model could be uncomfortable but that just reinforces my point - if the camera is too small buy a bigger camera! Especially if you are willing to pay for an OEM grip that is worth as much as the camera is to begin with, just go up a model or 2!

Not really, all starter DSLR's are small. Telling someone who just wants to dip their toe in to buy a more expensive prosumer body or even an older cheaper body, as opposed to a grip which is the cheapest option (plenty of good quality oem alternatives) isn't necessarily the best advice.

The OP wanted to buy a branded grip which would be 250-300 quid, putting that money towards a better camera body would be more beneficial.

But as I've said, i've never, every had an issue with my Nikon bodies, in portrait mode or otherwise.

Well he obviously needs yo be put straight on oem vs 3rd party grips, oh and you gave girly hands :D

I find shooting in portrait mode using AF tracking on moving subjects much more comfortable with a grip, rather than hooking your hand all the way over. Also produces many more keepers when panning with a slow shutter speed as your grip/position is much better. If I know I'll be shooting a lot of portrait orientation shots I'll stick the grip, else I'm fine. The 7D body is much bigger, when I had 500D I pretty much always used the grip.

Let's face it, Canikon could stick all their goodies into an SL1 sized body we'd be very happy having the option for the smaller body only, or better handling if required with a grip?

1) I'm not the OP!

2) I never wanted to pay the money for an OEM battery grip (even so, they are only around £120 for those bodies) The reason I pointed out the OEM battery grip, was becuase the aftermarket ones also have the exposusre controls and shutter release. Because the D5100 doesn't officially support any battery grip, the aftermarket ones don't have any exposure control, and the shutter release is only usable if you connect a cable between the grip and body, which is just inelegant.

I'm buying at the lower end of the market, so a bigger body (which means a big step up in cost) is just not where I'm looking. I don't know that I will need a grip, but I like to fully consider my options. It's why I ask for these opinions on a forum!

if you go second hand you should be able to pick up a bigger body for the right price if desired

Fair enough. I just never saw the point at all, i don't think my hands are girly but maybe they are:D I've never had an issue holding my camera in portait orientation but I can't say I do it that often.

I'm probably getting a grip for my incoming D800 (should arrive today) but that is for a couple of reasons I never really had before:
1) Increased FPS
2) 24-70 and 70-200 will be my walk about lens combo, vs 16-85mm. The general weight of things will start putting more pressure on my wrists.
3) I'm starting to do some paid event work and might conceivable make more than a 1000 photos at one time and don't want o swap batteries out. When i'm not shooting event i'm lucky to get a dozen photos on a day trip (if i'm really lucky with the wildlife that might go to a few hundred).

Otherwise in 10 years of shooting a crop DSLR i've never once wanted a vertical grip, ever

Just "go up a model or 2" isn't exactly a reasonable option for everyone when a £40 grip can make life more comfortable. An OEM grip on a £500 camera is over the top, but Canikon know that and prey on it.

The first Nikon model that would probably feel perfect in my fingers right now is the D800. The D7100 and D610 are too close, and while the D7100 is certainly better than my D80 (to the point that I have it off as much as on), it's still not perfect for my hands. Maybe I should have played the piano instead!

I'd love to just have £1400 spare to jump from my D7100 to a D800 when the only reason I'd want it right now is the bigger grip, but I'm spending my money on some better lenses :).

Make sure you share your pics of the D800!

Hopefully the D9300 will be in a pro body like the D2x.:)

I am surprised you find he D7100 body particularly small. Then again I have no issues with lower finder supporting the base of the camera.

Its not that its small so much as my pinkie never seems perfectly happy on the grip so sometimes will sit and others wont. I'm never 100% happy lol.

Hi guys,

Decided that I would go for a new 1100d off of Amazon. I realize I'd get more for my money 2nd hand, but I cant resist the lure of brand new...I figured a cheaper body with a 18-55mm lens included gives me enough cash for another lens.

Out of these, if any, what would be a useful addition?

75-300mm - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-75-30..._sim_ph_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1SFRGSPPZK6FQ5TMTMTN

55-250mm - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-..._sim_ph_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=1SFRGSPPZK6FQ5TMTMTN

Sigma 70-300mm - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-70-30..._sbs_ph_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=1TQGRTV4X4KAH56JF182

The 55-200 is a great lens, and the IS can be very helpful, it's the first zoom lens I had and it's capable of producing some great photos.

Ah typical. The seller of that lens wont ship to France. Will have to purchase elsewhere.

Anyways. Just paid for the 1100d :)

Ordered the lens off amazon France.

e: I have 16gb sandisk ultra SD card. I assume that I will need to buy a 32/64gb SD card??

Congrats and welcome :)

You're probably looking at 5MB per JPG so 16GB will be more than enough.
