I am needing to put together a budget system, with a primary task of recording (running seqencer, vst instruments/synths etc). I have all the recording gear, audio interface etc, so just after the system.

Ideally then, this will be a fairly quiet unit. I don't want to eat into the performance budget making it completely silent, so can make do with 'pretty damn quiet';).

Secondary tasks will be the odd bit of photoshop and some gaming, so some grunt to the setup would be good. I will probably be running an hd 23" monitor with it.

Budget for build is £5-600.

Currently running an old Athlon 3800 on A8N-SLI with a 7800gt...and it sounds like a ****** 747 taxiing for takeoff. Have no idea on noise levels on stock coolers with the current gear. Also, is fanless psu the way to go...or are latest gen a lot quieter?

I await your recommendation gentlemen.

Slainte Mhath!

add a couple of case fans:D

What DAW are you using?

Chances are it'll support multi-core processing, in which case you'll defiantly want a quad. You'll also be wanting PC8500 memory too if you run VI/Samplers etc. For best performance, you should always use two 32MB Cache hard drives (one for system and software, other for audio files and samples).

@OzZie, thanks for your comments. Currently only going to be using a small mixerless audio interface, but hope to move on to a better DAW within the year. The PC8500 and double drive comments are well heeded, thanks.

@Everyone, having weighed up the options and advice given, I am thinking about the following spec. Any potential issues here? Thoughts appreciated.
