no monitor.. keyboard.. or mouse...

just a totally silent (as silent as possible) for the least amount of money. doesnt have to play games.. just run applications... maybe play the odd dvd/music.

hopefully i will get this in a few weeks...

use it for leaving on constantly downloading... so it wont keep me awake you see :)
 
Have you considered a micro pc build? They seem fine for dvd and browsing though I have not built any myself, they can be fanless and silent.

I woul;d go for the thermalright SL120 and put an amber 120mm fan on it they are almost inaudiable.

The rest seems ok just make sure the graphics card is passive.
 
i wouldnt mind the cube style computer... it would be ideal if it was portable.. but better than a lappy :p

maybe save money from the 6600 ... ? i wouldnt need it would i
 
Tbh your best bet is probably the silentpcreview forums rather than here.

You are probably looking at something along the lines of:

Either a biostar 6100 motherboard + sempron
or a venice/san diego A64 chip with either the Asus A8N-VM CSM or MSI K8NGM2-FID

That will give you a passive cooled motherboard with decent enough, very low power on board graphics with a CPU that is easily cooled quietly.

The rest very much depends on the size of machine you are looking to build. With the above mATX motherboards you have plenty of options.

In a tower style case simply add a quiet PSU (Antec neo HE 480 or Seasonic S12 are the current quietest without spending big money on a passive cooled one) and a 7volted 120mm Nexus fan (the quietest fan available)

With a scythe ninja passive heatsink you'll easily cool the above CPU/mobo at very very low noise levels. you could even undervolt the chip if you want to take it to the extreme.

The HD will now be the noisiest thing in the system. If you need decent storage go for a suspended samsung spinpoint HD. If you want to take the noise reduction a step further - you'll want to use a laptop hard drive as they run cooler and quieter and the noise can be further damped by enclosing it.

Combining all this in a smaller case is much harder however if you still want the ultra low noise levels. One possibility is the Silverstone SG01. I'm tempted to try one of these with a PSU that has a bottom mounted 120mm fan such as the seasonic. With an undervolted CPU and an XP120 heatsink (would have to check whether it all fitted etc) Ther psu fan may give the CPU and entire PC enough airflow to cool it without any other fans.....

... but I'm getting carried away here. The more detail you can give about the type of system you want the better - then we can give the the best advice on how to make that kind of system as quiet as possible.
