Spec me

Would i need to get a server for the domain controller and one for exchange?
No. can be on one.

This would need to be backed up aswell i was thinking of a dell powervault md1000 but it doesnt have raid?

So you're going to rely on just onsite backups to disk? If there's a fire on the premises (for example) you will lose all the data. Is that an acceptable risk?

DAS boxes run off the scsi/sas controller that you have installed on the server, so yes it has raid as long as the controller you install has RAID

would it not be better to keep exchange and the domain controller on separate servers to help prevent downtime.

So a das box would be better, great stuff. What about offsite backups? I never thought of this actually. What are your views on this keeping in mind there is going to be slot of storage needing backup up.

Better than what? Better than internal storage? Probably as you it has more scope for expansion.

Backing up 4tb offsite will be far from cheap. We do it at our place, but we have a sister company with a 100meg LL connection and a 6TB of dedicated backup SAN space over at their other site.

Not sure how much it would be to get an external provider to back up for you. A couple of grand a year at least i'd imagine.

Not sure with SBS (left it far behind me), i seem to recall you could have a "backup" domain controller of sorts, don't, but the SBS Server itself had to be a DC, and have Exchange installed on that box

tbh, get SBS2008 when it comes out, wait it out till then.
also go for the HP115 G5 or simmiler, upgrade the pants out of it and still cheaper by a LONG way than dell.
