Ok so I'm getting fed up with my boring nonchalant red 1.6 Clio.

My budget is extremely limited so I'll effectively be using the Clio sale money plus £500 there or thereabouts. The Clio is worth £2,000-2,500.

I've been thinking about a Jaguar X-Type - the only thing putting me off is the look. I love it personally but it can seem a bit too corporate/old manny. At this point it may be worth mentioning I'm 22.

I'm not a petrol head whatsoever and I base my judgements on looks and comfort, so this is obviously important. I'm also not interested in anything that's all performance and no suave. As Borat so accurately put it, it needs to be fitted with a pussy magnet.

So... looking on Autotrader and the like it seems my options are very limited for the price when I'm not interested in a Clio/Corsa/206 etc. My best friend has a Coupe so that's off the cards too.

Good luck :D

3 grand, pussy magnet.

Hmmmmmm, use £100 of your budget for some cheap cider in the boot and you might attract some pussy of a certain kind. :D

I have no idea about the comfortable/suave market so am unqualified to comment. Can you really pick up a decent X-Type for that money?

I'm under the impression a £2.5k X Type Jag will be riddled with problems.

Mondeo/Passat/Octavia don't win awards for "looks and comfort" but it's probably your safest bet. For the money you're considering, a lot of people on here swear by a Mondeo. (It's prettier than the Passat and Octavia).

As said, I don't know much about cars but it would seem so: example.

Also my current Clio was way cheaper than it should have been (bought it for £1,600) as I found it in the local newspaper at a dealership in a village. I'm hoping I'll be able to do the same with a Jag.

Dont forget it's pretty much a Mondeo, and X-Type used prices do reflect this somewhat, its a bit of a bargain of a car if you do think of it as a 'Jaguar' for under £3k. However, as with most things going for the cheapest one you see isnt always the best idea.

bmw 318 or similar.

While a lot of people around here will say how pointless this is, if you just want something to impress the ladies, they wont know the difference between a 318i and a 330i. Should be cheaper to run and buy too.

But, it still wouldnt be my recommendation. If you like the X type but not the looks, then its simple - Mord Fundano. Girls are never going to be impressed by an x type, you may as well get a Volvo on that basis.

2 cars spring to mind, first is this:

Comfort probably isnt high on the list, but it is fun and young ladies love stuff like that.

However, this probably ticks all the boxes:

Comfortable, looks good, a LOT of car for the money and girls will think you've got a red Ferrari.

I know you said your best mate has a coupe so thats out the question, but you didnt say what coupe, plus that doesnt really make sense so I ignored it :)

Thanks for the advice iaind.

Firstly, Hyundai Coupe :). They're in the price range and do tick the boxes but my friend would never let me live it down if I bought the same car as him. On a similar note another good friend has a new MX. Clearly my friends have stolen all available cars.

I'll take a look at your other recommendations.

Jags certainly do get comments from ladies, but I'm not sue an X Type will do it. I don't think it's a particularly wise road to go down with £3K anyway, it can be done, but it'll likely cost more in short order. If you had £5k or £6k you could get a very nice Jag, a proper one too, with RWD and lots of wood and cow :)

Well not the sort of women you would want to be attracted to you I think :D ....and my Mum quite offten shops in Asda ...they have a good fruit and veg section.

You know what bro, if you're after the ladies then you can't go wrong with a bmw or mercedes badge on the bonnet... and as it's just for the ladie then you may be able to get a lower spec smaller engined versions of them for your budget although just be aware that most bmws for that price range would probably have been raggd and not taken care of, and it would be the same for mercedes and the x-type you're after. X-types are not really the type of car for attracting girls at they are normally driven by business men BUT the fact you aree young and in a jag would say to them that your loaded and thus cause the attraction you are after...

My choice would deffinately be a bmw but for my personal reasons of the good drive coupled with the looks, as you are just in it for the looks I suggest you look for a car with a "status" badge (bimmer, merc, alpha, audi... for the price range you are looking at) that you personally like the look of.

Remember, the girls that like guys based ont heir cars are just after your wallet!! (So make sure you buy something that looks expensive ;))

406 coupe, definitely then. The example I posted looks a bit ropey but there's plenty about for your budget.

A friend has a 2.2HDi SE, its suprisingly comfy and refined with a lot of toys. He's had more than one "Is that a ferrari?" comment too

Of course people care.

I got 0 comments in 5 years of ownership when I drove a Focus.

Since getting my S2000 in about 4 months I have had upwards of 15 different people say something. 90% of those were woman :D
